Smith is a great player at a position of need but having a DC that actually can do the job is far more important. Be nice if both had worked out, but c'est la vie.
Ulbrich is a LB coach that his friend up-jumped to a position he hadn't earned or had the skill to succeed at. I'd far prefer an x's and o's coach who you can surround with good recruiters than a great recruiter (which it seems he was) who has no clue about the college game (which he didn't). Maybe he would've got better, but he should've been cutting his teeth in the Mountain West not the PAC-12.
