LOS ANGELES --UCLA has named Wilton Speight its starting quarterback for the Bruins’ season opener against Cincinnati Saturday, head coach Chip Kelly announced today.
Speight, who came to UCLA as a graduate transfer over the summer, previously started 16 games over the course of three seasons (2015-17) at the University of Michigan after sitting out the 2014 campaign. The Richmond, Va. native passed for 3,192 yards and 22 touchdowns during his time with the Wolverines, including a 221-yard, two-touchdown performance versus Cincinnati last year. A breakout 2016 saw Speight earn an All-Big Ten Third Team selection after passing for at least one touchdown in 10 of 12 games played.
