STORY: Latest on Madden Iamaleava and ‘toss up’ between Nebraska and UCLA

As many of you know, I also freelance and cover HS sports for Southern California News Group (specifically, the Daily Breeze and Long Beach Press-Telegram).

Later tonight I will be covering Long Beach Poly at Warren boys volleyball. On that Warren team is Madden Iamaleava, the 2025 four-star QB that has UCLA and Nebraska as his clear front-runners. So, that assignment is basically a happy accident.

I’ll gauge where things currently stand and the plan is to interview him and get his specific thoughts on the coaching staff, etc. and see if he’s planning to be at the Rose Bowl Saturday or on campus in the future.

UCLA spring camp: Visitors week of 4/23-4/27

With the showcase Saturday at the Rose Bowl, that’s easily when the big wave of visitors will be taking place.

One person for sure at Tuesday morning’s practice was Marko Luera, who previously visited for the first public practice of spring April 2.

There also were two recruits I’m trying to ID who were with CBs coach Kodi Whitfield early in Tuesday’s practice and what sounded like a transfer visitor walking by after practice with UCLA recruiting staff assistant JD Lake as we were waiting to go back inside to do interviews. So, I’ll hopefully update this once I can figure it out.

Basketball recruiting

It appears that we have another commit pending per the MOW cryptic messaging. If we do, and if the rumors of the combo guard from Loyola being true, we have 14 scholarship players for 13 spots. What do you suppose we do? Tell a player less than a week before the portal closes that he no longer has a spot?

What message does this send future recruits?

What happens if we go all in on mercenaries and we flop? Who will want to come here and how do we fill a roster without underclassmen in future years?

UPDATE: 2025 DE Chinedu Onyeagoro puts UCLA in top 10

Freelancing duties have me busier than usual at the start of a week. So instead of a write-up, here’s the full interview I did with three-star 2025 DE Chinedu Onyeagoro.

There’s still a sense he doesn’t quite know what he wants when it comes to schools atop his list (he lists several). He hasn’t provided me the dates of his upcoming visits since doing this interview but didn’t want to hold it too much longer.

Judging by the other official visit dates we’ve been made aware of, I’d say it’s safe to say his UCLA official will be around early May. I’ll provide an update once he does get back to me.
