George MacIntyre update

Hey everyone, caught up with the highly-touted 2025 QB last night after his game. So far this season, he's taken gameday visits to LSU, Alabama, and Tennessee. After a late-May visit to UCLA, the four-star QB will be heading back to Los Angeles for the Bruins game against Colorado next weekend.

MacIntyre said he talks mainly to the trio of Chip Kelly, Ryan Gunderson, and Jeff Faris - here is what he had to say about the Bruins below...

"I went up there in late May and didn't really know what to think. Never been to a PAC-12 school, but they really blew me away. I loved it. Loved the campus. Loved the offense. Coach (Chip) Kelly is an offensive guy and they have a lot of things going for them and now going to the Big Ten."

"I talk the most with Chip Kelly, Coach (Ryan) Gunderson, and Coach (Jeff) Faris, who is actually from Tennessee, their tight ends coach and he's done a really good job. He was the old quarterbacks coach at Duke, so we've had a long relationship."

I’ll have a formal story with some thoughts from recruits previewing their visit for next Saturday’s Homecoming contest against Colorado, and among them will be the 2025 three-star tight end who plays at Corona del Mar.

Giuliano told me today that next weekend’s game will be his second visit for a game and he’s unofficially visited the campus back when he was a freshman. He was also at UCLA’s win over North Carolina Central this season.

He’s also made trips out to Notre Dame and Wisconsin in May and during the season he’s been out to other games at Cal, Stanford, USC and Washington.

Giuliano currently holds offers from Arizona, Arizona State, Cal, Ole Miss, San Diego State, UNLV, Utah and Washington.

The programs currently pushing hardest are Auburn, Cal, Florida State, Ole Miss, Utah, Washington and Wisconsin.

As for UCLA, he’s got a relationship with tight ends coach Jeff Faris that goes back to his freshman year and Faris has been out to his team’s practices this season.

Back when Faris was at Duke, he offered Giuliano’s older brother Scott, who is a tight end currently at Harvard.

“He likes how physical I am blocking and that I line up all over the field and catch a lot of passes,” Giuliano said of Faris.

STORY: Chip Kelly non-committal as Ethan Garbers renews the UCLA QB quandary

Unpacking the QB situation to this point of the season, with comments from not only last night but previous games to figure out what exactly is going on and where it’s headed:

Satisfying Victory

I love blowouts.
I know it was only Stanford, but we more than doubled the point spread and finally saw a consistent performance from our quarterback.
Ethan Garbers was the game manager this team needs. He ran the offense with efficiency, made quick, decisive decisions, passed accurately and scrambled well when he had to.
Again, it was against a weak Stanford defense, but it wasn’t so weak that it wasn’t able to put pressure on Garbers.
I was just as stunned as most when it was announced Garbers was going to start and though I usually take what Chip says with some skepticism, I do believe Dant was somewhat banged up. He was limping quite noticeably at the end of the OSU game.
Although nether Chip nor Ethan said they talked about a redshirt, some of Garbers’ comments about how he felt watching three games from the sidelines was a little telling.
Going forward, I can’t see Garbers not starting vs Colorado and expect a similar performance again.
Now we may get to see how Dante handles watching from the sideline and hopefully learn from it.
Btw, how did Sc do last night?

UCLA postgame transcript following 42-7 win at Stanford

First, Chip Kelly (courtesy of Ben Bolch, LA Times):

“I thought it was a good team win, I think both sides offensively and defensively really contributed. We generated a pass rush and made it difficult for their offense but that front of ours is difficult to block, so we kept them kind of behind and then offensively I thought we got off to a good start and as walk about all the time, especially in conference games, if you win the turnover battle, you’ve got an opportunity to win the game, so we did not turn it over offensively today, we caused two from them, so those are some of the positives you can take from it.”

WHAT WENT INTO SWITCH AT QB AND WHEN MAKE THAT DECISION?

“At the end of the week. Dante was banged up a little bit at the beginning of the week, so Garbs got the predominant amount of snaps early in the week and then over the course of the week as we looked at, you know you get to the end of the week like we always do, where are we, what’s our depth, who can contribute and so Ethan earned the start this week from a practice standpoint in terms of where we are, but I thought Dante came in and did a really nice job. Dante was really good toward the end of the week himself, so we’re pretty confident in what we have at quarterback right now.”

BANGED UP FROM PRACTICE OR PREVIOUS GAME OR BOTH?

“Everything.”

HE WAS STRUGGLING, HOW MUCH DID THAT GO INTO IT?

“Didn’t.”

WHAT THINK OF ETHAN TONIGHT?

“I thought Ethan played really well tonight. We’ve always felt like we’ve had depth at the quarterback spot. I think Collin Schlee is a really good quarterback and Collin wasn’t available today, but we’ve always felt like we’ve had three kids that can play quality football for us, so really pleased with Ethan today but I don’t think anything that Ethan did surprised any of us on our staff or any of our players because we see that on a daily basis from Ethan.”

ETHAN’S ABILITY TO SCRAMBLE AND RUN WITH BALL, WHAT DOES THAT BRING TO OFFENSE?

“Yeah, the same thing, I thought he kept some drives alive and I think Dante did too when he was in there later, kept a couple of drives alive, but when people are going to play man coverage, if they’re not going to spy the quarterback then your quarterback has to be able to make–it the coverage is tight, you don’t have an opportunity to have an open receiver, then you have to use your feet and I think he extended drives for us because he made some critical decisions to take off and go and that was big for us today.”

HAVE A CONVERSATION WITH ETHAN ABOUT NO MORE REDSHIRTING?

“No, I’ve never had a conversation with him.”

WHERE DOES THIS LEAVE THE QUARTERBACK SITUATION GOING FORWARD?

“I think in great shape. We feel really good about our quarterback situation. We’ve got a couple of really, really good quarterbacks, so we’re excited.”

SO WHAT WILL DETERMINE WHO’S YOUR STARTER GOING FORWARD?

“We’ll see who’s healthy and available at the end of every week like we do every week.”

CARSON STEELE HAD A BIG GAME, WHAT THINK OF HIM IN SHORT-YARDAGE SITUATIONS?

“Yeah, just tough, hard-nosed, physical runner, he’s always running behind his pads, has great body lean, he’s got great balance. Very rarely does the first person knock him down and he’s got a great mindset when it comes to running the football, he’s tenacious when he has the ball in his hands, so really productive. We didn’t get as much run with him in the second half but we were trying to get some of those other guys in. I thought Anthony Adkins did a really nice job with his [carries], T.J. had a huge run right at the end of the third quarter there when it looked like Stanford was getting back in the game a little bit and we needed a little bit of momentum back on our side and T.J. hit a big run on a third and long call that popped it for us, so again, I think that’s another position where we have some depth but Carson’s been outstanding all year long and was tough, hard-nosed, physical again today.”

ON GARBERS, PERFORMANCE ON THIRD DOWNS:

“I thought he did a good job overall, there's some decisions he wants back. We'd go on the sideline and talk about kind of what just transpired on the last drive. I'm sure he'd say the same thing. Overall, I thought in every facet he played very well.”

ON THE DEFENSE:

“We've been really pleased with what those guys can do. And I think there's a front, our linebackers are playing at an outstanding level right now. And I think the backend is really doing some good things. We were very conscious of their receiver, he had 294 yards in the second half of the week in the game the week before, so we had to know where he was on every play and I thought our guys did a really nice job. He caught the one slant I thought we did a great job punching the ball out turned into a turnover, but by containing him and continuing their passing game, because that's what got him back in the game against Colorado, was critical to us.
But it starts with the pass rush. And then we got to get close in coverage. And I think for the most part we did a good job throughout the game.”

HOW MANY TIMES IN YOUR COACHING CAREER HAVE YOU HAD MORE FIRST DOWNS THAN THE OTHER TEAM HAD YARDS RUSHING?

“Not very often. We had a barnburner with Hofstra once….

“Just sad we’re not going to play here again. This is a special place, keep going down memory road when we’re here. And I’ve been the other side of it here, it’s good to win here. It’s tough to win here.”

Some football recruiting notes from Culver City

Was in Palos Verdes today to cover the Bay League title game between Palos Verdes and Culver City.

On Culver City is standout 2024 inside linebacker Jashon “J.R.” Kirkwood, who is related to UCLA cornerback Devin Kirkwood.

I caught up with his coach Jahmal Wright to ask about where things stand and while UCLA does have the relationship it hasn’t quite pulled the trigger on an offer.

The growing relationship may actually be with 2025 brothers Braylon and Myles Singleton.

Both had big days as receivers, with a touchdown apiece. Myles had 7 catches for 84 yards and was the top target, an ultra-athletic body who was all over the field.

Braylon had 6 catches for 89 yards, but he’s listed as a cornerback by Rivals.

May be two to keep an eye on, as Wright said UCLA is really focusing on its 2025 class from the Culver City point of view.

NCAA’s proposal for NIL activities involving Division I athletes

Would go into effect January 2024, if passed:

Among the highlights, athletes must disclose NIL agreements to their respective schools no later than 30 days after signing and entering into the agreement. Failure to do so would make them ineligible to play.

The disclosure would have to include contact information of the individuals involved, terms of the deal including the compensation and term length, description of services agreed upon, rights granted and terms between the athlete and agent.

The NCAA’s national office would make available a database of disclosed NIL agreements.

Laiatu Latu on AP midseason All-American team

UCLA edge rusher Laiatu Latu was named an Associated Press midseason first-team All-American today:

Where do we go from here?

Is the seat under Chip Kelly heating up?
Probably. But it would be a mistake, IMO, to fire him now.
Many of our dreams are out the window now, but because USC suddenly looks very beatable and because of our relatively soft schedule ahead of us, we should go at least 4-2 in our remaining 6 games against Stanford, Cal, the Arizona schools, Colorado and Sc.
Our problems, however, begins with Chip, or more specifically, his stubbornness and his failure to recognize his mistakes.
One big mistake he has made is in not realizing our prize freshman quarterback is not improving as expected. Dante Moore has a ton of talent — we’ve seen glimpses of it — but he is also having difficulties adjusting to the speed of D1 defenses and because he hasn’t gone through his reads fast enough, he often doesn’t see receivers who are open.
Chip can see that and should be adjusting his game plan accordingly — more runs, fewer and shorter passes — until the game slows down for Dante.
I like Chip’s philosophy about picking one guy and sticking with him so that he doesn’t have to worry about making a mistake in fear of being pulled out, but when those mistakes are made repeatedly, he has to have the courage to make a switch.
The problem is, the quarterback who was apparently No. 1 all spring and through most of the Fall, looks like he has decided to redshirt this season so he can transfer someplace where he can start and play for 2 years (that move is not official and there has been no announcement about Garbers’ plans but it seems that way after he was replaced as placeholder after 4 games).
That’s another head scratcher— using Garbers as place holder of instead of saving him for games like yesterday where he could have helped us.
Chip is a stubborn man and his unwillingness to adjust his game plans is going to cost him his job.
But this is not the time to make a change. It’s too late for this year.
But I think our AD is probably already drawing up a list of possible coaches.
To me, it’s just a matter of time.

MBB preseason AP Top 25 poll

The Associated Press has released its preseason top 25 poll this morning and UCLA is one of the top teams outside the top list. The Bruins received 47 points to tie with St. John's as the third team outside the top 25 behind Wisconsin and Colorado. Marquette, UCLA's first opponent at the Maui Invitational, comes in at No. 5 while potential second-round opponent, Kansas, will enter the season ranked No. 1.

No. 22 Villanova is also on the nonconference schedule for the Bruins while another opponent, Maryland, received votes as well.

No. 12 Arizona and No. 21 USC are the two Pac-12 teams included in the preseason poll.

Football practice 10/16

I’m out with an illness today, but here’s a transcript of what Chip had to say:

FILM TAKEAWAYS?

“The film takeaway is we gave up 13 points on three turnovers, we can’t turn the ball over on the offensive side of the ball. It was as 12-point game and we have to do a better job offensively in all phases, especially in the turnover game, and then all the turnovers came different ways–we need to protect better, we need to route run better and we need to throw the ball better, so the front, the receivers and the quarterback all have a part of it, so we have to do a better job, especially in the turnover deal. You can’t lose the turnover battle on the road in this conference and expect to win the football game, so.”

HOW ADDRESS THREE STRAIGHT PICK-SIXES?

“They’re all the same, they’re all the same and you can’t do that, you can’t give up points, the defense doesn’t even have a shot to get on the field in those situations to stop them, so we’re playing well on the defensive side of the ball and if you look at the games, in the two games we lost the turnovers were a big part of that, so we need to get that fixed.”

HOW THE SAME, PROCESSES AND DECISION-MAKING?

“No, all three–any pick-six–happens, it’s the same, it has the same impact, so that’s what I mean by that–the impact of that play is a really big deal. A turnover is a turnover but a turnover that directly leads to points is a big deal, so.”

HOW GO ABOUT KEEPING DANTE’S CONFIDENCE UP?

“I think that’s part of Dante’s makeup, I think he’s a very resilient young man, he’s mature beyond most kids at that age–he’s still an 18-year-old kid but I think that’s one of the things that he’s got a great set of intangibles, he’s a really, really resilient person and I think he has the ability to live in the present, he doesn’t live in the past, he doesn’t live in the future, he lives in the present and that’s a really special quality for people to have and so I think it’s something that in every situation, I think he learns and he’ll grow from that.”

WHAT CAN HE DO DIFFERENTLY ON THOSE TURNOVERS?

“They’re all different and individual–sometimes it’s decision-making, sometimes it’s footwork, so they’re all different. There’s not one specific thing; if there was one specific thing–we’d say, ‘Hey, do this’ and then it would never happen again but each time it expresses itself in kind of a different way, so.”

UPDATE ON COLLIN SCHLEE?

“He’s unavailable today.”

LOOK LIKE A LONGTERM THING?

“He’s unavailable today.”

IS ETHAN GARBERS AVAILABLE IF YOU NEEDED HIM AT QUARTERBACK?

“Yeah. Yes, very much so.”

HAVE A GOOD RELATIONSHIP WITH DAVID SHAW, HOW ABOUT TROY TAYLOR?

“I don’t know Troy very well at all. I’ve met him at league meetings but I don’t know Troy that way. I was with David since 2009–we were both head coaches earlier in our career and obviously David’s son is with us now, so I’ve known David for a long time. I don’t know Troy–I have a lot of respect for Troy, did an unbelievable job at Sac State and is doing a really good job now–they had a huge win last weekend and he deserves a ton of credit for what he’s doing with those guys right now.”

HOW WERE THEY ABLE TO COME BACK DOWN 29-0?

“Um, you know, I think they did a good job of really just coming out in the second half because it was 29-0 at halftime and again, I saw the coaches copy, I didn’t watch the game on TV, but I thought they did a good job of containing a really explosive offense, you know, Shaddeur and that group of guys, especially in the throw game is really, really explosive and they did a good job of kind of stemming some of the things that hurt them in the first half and then their receiver went off. They had a kid that had almost 300 yards in the second half and seemed almost unguardable at times. He had a 93-yarder on a slant, he caught a ball and a lot of times you give Colorado credit–they’re there in coverage and the kid just made some spectacular plays in terms of catching the football. But the quarterback I think got settled down a little bit and knew where to go with the ball and it seemed like one of those things that just kind of–as bad as the first half was for them, the second half just kind of steamrolled the other way for them, so you’ve got to play four quarters, especially in this league. It’s tough to win on the road in this league and for them to go do that in a really hostile environment at Colorado is a real credit to them, so.”

HOW ACCOUNT FOR THAT RECEIVER?

“There’s got to be a lot of different things–again, there’s not just one coverage. You’ve got to be able to roll coverage to him, you’ve got to be able to push guys underneath him, but they have some other guys too. You know, the Brockmaier kid who’s a young kid, a young receiver out there, did a nice job in some of their things. They lost their tight end, Yuresek (sp?), early in that game, so I think they became a little more wide-receiver driven, but they do have some other players but I think one of those guys that you’re going to have to know where he is at all times–I think we faced the same thing when we were facing Josh Kelly at Washington State, you know, being really aware of where the receivers are is a big deal, so I think they’re growing as a team, they’re still trying to figure out their identity but that win last weekend was a real huge step for them.”

RUN GAME INCONSISTENT WHEN YOU LOOKED AT FILM?

“Yeah, I think there were flashes and there were times we looked really, really good and there were other times when, for lack of a better term, we left some meat on the bone, so we need to continue to grow on the offensive side of the ball. Statistically, when you look at it, we did rush for a lot of yards but Collin had a little bit to do with that too, so that was a little bit different schematic changeup that we hadn’t shown in the past and Collin did a good job of really taking advantage of what we had but we need to be more consistent in terms of just being able to rush the football, so.”

ANY OTHER QBS WHO CAN RUN THE SCHLEE PACKAGE? JUSTYN?

“Yeah, we have a lot of kids who can do that stuff, so we’ll see what happens with that.”

SHOULD COLLEGE ATHLETES MAKING CEO MONEY OPEN THEM UP TO PRO-STYLE CRITICISM SINCE SOME ARE MAKING MORE THAN PEOPLE PAYING TO WATCH THE GAMES?

“I don’t think that I would ever lecture anybody on how they’re supposed to analyze what a person should do and everybody is entitled to their own opinion of anything, so it would be very presumptuous of me or anybody else that you’d say ‘because this guy is doing this, you should treat him in a different way.’ I think we should all treat people nice when we see them, but I don’t really think of that aspect of it.”

IS CALLING COLLEGE PLAYERS PRO ATHLETES NOW A FAIR COMPARISON GIVEN THAT SOME ARE MAKING SEVEN FIGURES?

“I don’t look at it that way. And I also don’t think because a pro athlete makes money that people should be allowed to criticize them, you know what I mean? You know, do people go into the workforce of some banker and just start heckling him? Saying, ‘Hey, you make $750,000 and the mortgage rates are this, inflation is at an unbelievable pace so what the heck are you guys doing? You’re absolutely out of your mind, let’s get rid of you, let’s fire this guy and cut this guy and do all that? I mean, it’s the nature of sports–we all got involved in it, we all understand it, and that’s the beauty of sports–everybody is allowed to have their opinion and everybody thinks they’re the manager of the New York Yankees, everybody has a better way to do things, that’s what makes this country great–you are entitled to your own opinion, but just because someone makes money, I don’t think you can put it into that thing because this person makes money, we should do that, so are we going after every CEO on Wall Street? I mean, are we going after every politician now because the inflation’s through the roof? I leave that up to other people; we’re trying to get some first downs here.”

KENNY CHURCHWELL AVAILABLE TODAY?

“Yeah, Kenny will be available today.”

DID HE PLAY IN THE GAME?

“No. He did not play.”

THOUGHTS ON LAST STANFORD GAME?

“Yeah, I mean, it’s all sad and it’s all–I have feelings on the whole thing. I think we should all still be together and some people should be able to work that out–let’s criticize them, let’s not criticize high school athletes, let’s criticize the people who are making really good money that have put us in this situation and so it is sad and I’ve had some great games, really enjoyed playing up there and Stanford’s had such a great tradition of football players–especially in the last 10 to 15 years of the Andrew Lucks and the Gerharts and there’s been some tremendous players who have come out of there–the Kodi Whitfields, I’ve got to make sure I say the Whitfields, you know, there’s been some tremendous players there some some rivalries–I had a chance to coach some of them, Zach Ertz is one of the best all-time tight ends to play in this conference and has had a tremendous career in the NFL and so that part’s a little, you know, but we’re going to keep saying that almost every week because there’s only four of us going to one league and the other four going to another league and two that didn’t get taken anywhere and my feelings on that, you know, I think we should be able to find a way. You never know in this world; as Kyle Whittingham told me, we both were waxing melodramatic of, and he said, ‘Hey, in two years we’ll probably be back in the same conference together anyway, so nobody really knows in this whole deal, so.”

TALKED TO DAVID SHAW ABOUT IT?

“I have not talked to David, I saw David after, the last time I saw David was after the North Carolina Central game because Carter played and he was here to watch, so Carter got in a little bit and played in that game, and that was the last time I talked to David, so.”

WILL DAVID BE ROOTING FOR THE BRUINS ON SATURDAY?

“I believe he’ll be rooting for Carter, I don’t know–I know the David Shaw I know as a person is probably really, really close to a lot of those players who are still there and is still pulling for those guys, so I have not talked to him this week and don’t plan on talking to him this week until after the game, so I would imagine the David Shaw I know would be pulling for everybody that he knows, so.”
