Virtually every year since Jim Mora arrived at UCLA his staff has done very well in recruiting. Yet for those same years rating services say the team across town did better. So let's talk about subsequent development...the way top recruits see it. That is how well did the respective staffs from UCLA and USC perorm in getting them picked at the NFL Draft.
Mora just finished his fourth year, meaning a review of the 2016 NFL Draft would be almost exclusively players he brought to Westwood. The cumulative score against that team across town? 8 To 4, 1 To Nothing, and 2 First (not to mention a 6 To 1 blitzkrieg yesterday).
USC with all their 5 star recruits only got four picks. UCLA (with a lower overall star rating and few 5 stars) doubled that, making it 8 To 4. Kenny Clark went at No. 27 while Trojans didn't get a sniff in the first round for 1 To Nothing. Then Myles Jack was the first pick of round 2, so two Bruins were taken before they mentioned the cross town school. Two First.
Count on those stats being mention on the recruiting trail between now and February. You're a high four or five star with dreams of playing on Sundays? You can sign with a former NFL head coach (aided by NFL coaching veterans) who get people into the NFL as expected. Or would you prefer a guy who never played or coached in the NFL, and a staff that consistently turns highly rated recruits into chopped liver??
