Gary Trent was grew up in Ohio, and after attending Ohio University played for several teams in the NBA before retiring from the Minnesota Timberwolves. Fans from that era would remember his college days as a bull in the china shop type, and his nickname was The Shaq Of The MAC.

His son Gary Trent Jr. is a supremely talented and very highly recruited combo guard, announced a final four of college choices (part of a blog he's doing for USA Today). Like his father Gary is a big freakish body wise, with a guard's height of 6'3" but a power forward's wingspan of 6'10".

Recently he dropped his list to five including Kentucky, but apparently the Wildcats are out of it now. There are two additional things of note for Gary, that may bode well for UCLA.

1. He's originally from Apple Valley, Minnesota (a far southern suburb of Minneapolis), and was playing for Findley Prep of Las Vegas last year

2. For his senior season he transferred to Prolific Prep in Napa, California

Michigan State is in his final four, but no school from Ohio or Minnesota. So while he may play in the Midwest, it doesn't look to have a home town / family town flavor. Then we him in the West last year, and now will be used to the life style in California.

It's also interesting that Arizona is on the list. This because that's further evidence distance isn't a factor, and obviously he's high on the Pac 12 with half the final group from that conference. No doubt Sean Miller will be selling him the Point Guard U meme (which is false advertising at it's best).

The last school of the four is Duke, which many prognosticators are picking. However some feel that's more because of Coach K's recruiting reputation, rather than because Trent is actually going to pick the Blue Devils.

Having Coach Alford in the late running for Trent with national heavy hitters K, Miller, and Tom Izzo seems to indicate the Bruin program is still doing well in recruiting.
