News, notes and evaluations
I couldn't watch everybody, because I was the only one from Rivals at the camp, but here's my best shot:
Quarterbacks
-Dorian Thompson-Robinson flashed the arm talent today. His fastball is better than any 2018's that I've seen so far. He had more incompletions today than you'd like to see, and he threw a camp-ending pick-six to Quentin Lake, but with the arm he has and the frame he possesses, he's a no-brainer top 100 guy, despite being a backup at Gorman. We all thought he'd make an insta-commitment after the offer, but he told me after that he's going to wait this thing out. His mom wants him to really think about it. Regardless, at this point, it seems inevitable that he and teammate Brevin Jordan end up as a package deal to UCLA.
Wide receivers
-I thought the top wideout in attendance was Chase Williams. He's long and smooth and has soft hands. He disappeared during 7-on-7, but he was great in 1-on-1s and flashed the most upside at camp. I think he's a top 100 guy in 2018. After UCLA offered, I spoke to him and he said he's really high on the Bruins, but he's likely going to take this one all the way into his senior year.
-UCLA offeree Kevin Davis had a nice day. Despite being a little undersized, he scored a couple touchdowns in 7-on-7 and had a really good showing in 1-on-1s. The Bruins offered a while ago, but I'm not sure how committable it is. With UCLA only taking one, maybe two wideouts this cycle, he might have to wait until guys like Tarik Black or Jamire Calvin officially go elsewhere.
-The surprise here of camp was Buena Park's Devon Cooley. He's a skinny wideout with nice speed and suddenness. He flashed especially in 1-on-1s. Eric Yarber loved him, constantly praising him after reps. He told me UCLA is absolutely his favorite school, and a commitment could come once he sits down and processes it all.
Tight ends
-I love Brevin Jordan. He had a little bit of the dropsies early in 1-on-1s, but he rebounded to have a hell of a day. He ran a 4.6 in the 40-yard dash and was big and athletic. Great-looking TE prospect who still has UCLA on top at the moment.
-I don't get the hype with 2018 TE Mustapha Muhammad. He was slow, running a high 4.7 40-yard dash, and he didn't catch the ball very well all day. I didn't think he was great in Atlanta either.
Offensive line
-There weren't any Adrian Klemm targets in the camp, but I spoke with both Jaxson Kirkland and Ronald Rudd after their unofficial visits. Kirkland loved his trip and was wearing a UCLA hat. He's set to commit on Aug. 14, and if UDub doesn't get involved, this one will almost certainly be UCLA. Rudd also loved his trip, and as an early enrollee next winter, he's going to make a decision within the next three or so months. He's got a few officials lined up to places like ASU and Wazzu, but I think UCLA should be in the top three or so here until the end.
Defensive line
-Chaminade's Mykee Irving was the lone UCLA offeree here. I didn't get to watch any OL-DL stuff because I was at the skill position stuff, but I saw him prior to camp and he's a really stout kid. Looked like the prototypical noseguard and he's still got two years left until his Signing Day.
Linebackers
-Again, I didn't see too much LB stuff, because I was watching skill position work. But I talked with both Salua Masina and Solomon Tuliaupupu about their new UCLA offers. Both loved it, and both look like they'll have the Bruins in their top three or fours for the duration of their recruitments. Yet both said they'll probably take this thing into their senior years.
-On a side note, Ground Zero LB Richard Cage ran a 4.59 and looked really good in individuals. If UCLA misses on Rahyme Johnson and Addison Gumbs, Cage would be a nice guy to come back around to.
Defensive backs
-I loved Corona Centennial's Jaylan Shaw today. He ran a 4.44 40-yard dash, and then was super sticky in 1-on-1s and 7-on-7s. Everybody's fallen in love with the Richard Sherman-style of recruits lately, but people forget Fabian Moreau is this team's best corner, and Shaw definitely fits more of that mold than the Colin Samuel/Dechaun Holiday/Denzel Fisher mold. Shaw told me he loves UCLA, and now that he has the offer, it's right there with USC, Boise State and Wazzu. If the Bruins really make him a priority, I think he's theirs.
-Quentin Lake also had a really good camp after a disappointing 4.8 40-yard dash. He's so physical that he just dominates receivers at the line. I think he probably projects as a safety, given his size and physicality, but he's one of those prototype CB/S recruits Demetrice Martin loves. Lake's father, Carnell Lake, played at UCLA and don't be surprised if Lake pulls the trigger on a commitment sooner rather than later. He showed up to camp in a UCLA sweater.
-Alabama DB Troy Young had a nice day at safety. Probably too many guys out West for Meat to really try with him. I also thought 2018 DB Ely Doyle, despite getting beat a lot in 1-on-1s, had a nice day at safety in 7-on-7.
