I was watching Stanford beat down Iowa (congratulations Cardinal....a team, coach, and school I respect) and of course Brett Mussberger had to throw out David Shaw's name into the NFL coaching vacancy discussion. I had a negative reaction right away to that, and Stanford's not "my team." Keep in mind, I hadn't heard anything about the "Mora to Miami" rumors.
Why would Shaw or Mora want to go to the NFL? How much joy can you find in working a thankless job where you could be out the same year you are hired for one mistake or a losing record? What is more thankless than working for primma donna billionaires who think there team should make the Super Bowl every year? What kind of pleasure can you take in the camaraderie, fellowship, "band of brothers" stuff when the NFL regards players as pieces of meat that are discarded with one injury or slip-up in production. Whats fun about something that cut throat? (See New England Patriots and how they manage their roster....the model for the modern NFL). Why would you trade that for the chance to win one Super Bowl? Is a Super Bowl that important because anything less will have you out on your ass quick fast in a hurry?
Unless you are at a top tier football school the national championship discussion is second to win against our rivals and some league championships. Seems like your career could be longer and that you could be financial secure especially when all the perks are considered. You could be making a big difference in the life of the guys you coach. So many more reasons, but I can't figure out why the NFL is always this big thing when college coaches seem to have it made if they can build winning programs at places without National Championship expectations (Mike Gundy @ Ok State, Kurt Ferentz @ Iowa, Pat Fitzgerald @ Northwestern and David Shaw @ Stanford).
Back to us....I'm not sure what Mora would get out of the NFL that he can't get here at UCLA....except a few more ulcers.
