For its first practice of its first two-a-day this summer, UCLA didn't really do a whole lot. There were individual drills, some team work and then situational scenarios. The workout only went an hour and a half, but there were still news and notes nonetheless:
-The biggest piece of news comes from tight end Chris Clark. While he sat out again today, Jim Mora was adamant after practice that the freshman TE would not redshirt and he will play against Virginia. I've heard Clark will be suited up for Monday's practice.
-DB Ishmael Adams (ankle) and OL Tevita Halalilo (heat) sat out practice today. They're the only two casualties of camp so far, so it's been relatively healthy out here.
-Myles Jack worked at kick returner today along with Mossi Johnson, Jordan Lasley, Stephen Johnson and Aaron Sharp. Honestly, out of the five, the big linebacker looked the best. Jack at kick returner really looks like it's going to happen this season.
-In the most interesting depth chart wrinkle the past few days, Devin Fuller was working as an outside receiver, taking Eldridge Massington's place in the starting lineup. Mossi Johnson worked at F, Thomas Duarte at Y and Jordan Payton at the other outside spot were the other starting receivers.
-It was just a glorified walkthrough today, with Mora spending at least 20 minutes on end-of-game situations, but there was still some 11-on-11 work, and I thought Josh Rosen threw some pretty passes there. On one play in particular, he scrambled in the pocket and fired a rope to the front corner of the endzone to a double-covered Alex Van Dyke. The ball was so perfectly thrown, with so much velocity, that Van Dyke was the only one who could haul it in, and he did for the TD. Rosen followed that up with a nice slant pass to Jordan Lasley for another touchdown as well. We're at the point now where at the very worst, it's an even race between the three QBs. And if that's the case, Rosen has to be the guy.
-DeChaun Holiday had a nice pass breakup on a deep ball from Rosen intended for Logan Sweet. I still wonder if he stays at CB, but he's looking better there as these practices go on. Certainly better than Priest Willis fared.
-I'm honestly shocked at how underwhelming Soso Jamabo has been in the practices I've seen. Yes, today was more of a walkthrough than anything, but he still dropped a swing pass, didn't hit holes hard and just generally looked disinterested in hitting home runs. He has a filthy lateral juke move, but other than that, he hasn't flashed much for being an uber prospect.
-UCLA LB commit Lokeni Toailoa was out at practice. I don't believe I saw his little brother Leni with him, however.
UCLA practices again this evening at 6:30 p.m. now to avoid the heat. It's expected to be full pads.
