UCLA finally took off the pads and had their shortest workout (still two hours and 20 minutes) of camp Friday night, probably setting up for a big, padded practice at fan appreciation day Saturday afternoon.
There was an hour and a half of walkthrough type stuff, but there were still some 1-on-1s, some 9-on-7, some 7-on-7, and some 11-on-11 work.
The notes from the evening:
-The injury situation is getting better. Sunny Odogwu, Najee Toran, Kenny Lacy, Nate Starks, Soso Jamabo and Breland Brandt all came back to practice tonight for the most part. The only notables out were Audie Omotosho, Brandon Stephens, Poasi Moala and Colin Samuel. None seems to have too serious of an injury.
Tonight's depth chart:
Offense
QB - Josh Rosen; Devon Modster
RB - Bolu Olorunfunmi; Nate Starks
WR - Christian Pabico, Theo Howard and Darren Andrews were the ones here again.
TE - Caleb Wilson; Jordan Wilson
LT - Kolton Miller; Jake Burton
LG - Michael Alves; Bryan Weitzman
C - Scott Quessenberry; Josh Wariboko
RG - Andre James; Michael Alves
RT - Kenny Lacy; Sunny Odogwu
Defense
DE - Jaelan Phillips; Keisean Lucier-South
DT - Osa Odighizuwa; Matt Dickerson
DT - Boss Tagaloa; Nick Terry
DE - Jacob Tuioti-Mariner; Rick Wade
OLB - Kenny Young; Breland Brandt
MLB - Lokeni Toailoa; Mique Juarez
OLB - Josh Woods; Krys Barnes
CB - Darnay Holmes; Denzel Fisher
S - Adarius Pickett; Will Lockett
S - Jaleel Wadood, Octo Spencer
CB - Nate Meadors, Keyon Riley
-A couple notes on the depth chart: Osa Odighizuwa earned run over Matt Dickerson with the ones at defensive tackle after a big night last night. Odogwu ran with the twos, even though he was back healthy. Also, Michael Alves worked with the first team for some reps at right guard, pushing Andre James to right tackle and Kenny Lacy to the bench.
-My top performer tonight: Darren Andrews. He caught everything. His highlight was a 20-yard gain that he hauled in between Jaleel Wadood and Octo Spencer, who were both hanging on him. He also had a key third-down gain in late 11-on-11s, which helped the offense get the "win" over the defense.
-Josh Rosen was sharp tonight, his third or fourth practice in a row where he looked as good as he usually does.
-Christian Pabico and Theo Howard also had good practices, as usual. The top three wideouts -- Andrews, Pabico and Howard -- have really separated themselves. Outside of Jordan Lasley, no other wideout has really even made a case to be up with the ones like those three. Howard the catch of practice, leaping up over Jay Shaw to pick a football basically off his back on an underthrown deep ball. Pabico probably had the other catch of practice, making a diving, toe-dragging reception on the sidelines from Rosen in 11-on-11s.
-As for the other wideouts on the team, it was a mixed bag. Demetric Felton got behind the defense for what would have been a monster deep ball from Devon Modster in 11-on-11s, but he dropped it. Alex Van Dyke had a really rough 1-on-1 sessions, dropping passes, but he rebounded to play OK in 11-on-11s with a few catches. Eldridge Massington probably had his best practice of camp, scoring a touchdown and hauling in several passes, but he did it almost exclusively against the third and fourth teams. Stephen Johnson didn't do much to standout in any drill tonight.
-Adarius Pickett had his first interception of camp, hauling in the INT in 1-on-1s against Damian Alloway. For the most part it was a rougher practice for the DB, though. He was usually tasked with guarding Darren Andrews, which wasn't easy.
-Octo Spencer also notched an interception while guarding Stephen Johnson in 1-on-1s. Jaleel Wadood and Keyon Riley also had picks (Riley's in 1-on-1s, Wadood's off a tipped Bolu Olorunfunmi drop in team drills). Jay Shaw's interception late in 11-on-11s off Austin Burton was probably the prettiest of the four, as he jumped the route. He's been the best freshman DB (outside of Darnay) at camp so far.
-Another standout at practice tonight was TE Jordan Wilson. His transformation from a skinny kid with a broken foot in high school to now is really remarkable. He had a left-handed highlight grab on Mique Juarez in team drills, and then he caught a deep rocket from Devon Modster down the seam. He nearly hauled in a touchdown over Mique Juarez late as well, but it was just off his fingertips.
-Working at kick returner today were: Damian Alloway, Jordan Lasley, Stephen Johnson, Bolu Olorunfunmi and Mossi Johnson.
-J.J. Molson is clearly a better kickoff man than Austin Kent, who's having a rough camp.
-Molson was 2-for-2 on the night from 40 yards and 32 yards. The 32-yarder gave the offense the "win" and ended practice.
UCLA practices next on Saturday at 3:15 p.m. It's fan appreciation day in lot 8 as well.
