With only three more days before the Bruins break camp, they began practice early Thursday afternoon and worked out in just shorts and jerseys (with little spider pads on underneath). With no pads on, the workout had a more walkthrough feel, though it still went two hours and 45 minutes.
The notes:
-UCLA's depth chart remained the same as it has been all week. Which is surprising, because it hints that UCLA is possibly looking at both Kenny Lacy and Sunny Odogwu starting on the bench vs. A&M.
Offense
QB - Josh Rosen; Devon Modster
RB - Soso Jamabo; Bolu Olorunfunmi
WR - Christian Pabico, Theo Howard and Darren Andrews were the ones
TE - Caleb Wilson; Jordan Wilson/Austin Roberts
LT - Kolton Miller; Kenny Lacy
LG - Najee Toran; Jake Burton
C - Scott Quessenberry; Josh Wariboko
RG - Michael Alves; Poasi Moala
RT - Andre James; Sunny Odogwu
Defense
DE - Jaelan Phillips; Keisean Lucier-South
DT - Matt Dickerson; Osa Odighizuwa
DT - Chigozie Nnoruka; Nick Terry
DE - Jacob Tuioti-Mariner; Rick Wade
OLB - Kenny Young; Breland Brandt
MLB - Lokeni Toailoa; Mique Juarez
OLB - Josh Woods; Krys Barnes
CB - Darnay Holmes; Denzel Fisher
S - Adarius Pickett; Will Lockett
S - Jaleel Wadood, Octo Spencer
CB - Nate Meadors, Keyon Riley
-Boss Tagaloa sat out 11-on-11 drills with an undisclosed injury, just as he did on Tuesday. Andre James left practice a few minutes early with a trainer, but it didn't look too serious.
-We saw DeChaun Holiday, Zach Bateman, Alex Akingbulu and Leni Toailoa in Lot 8 during practice. My guess is we might not see Holiday for a while, considering he's still in street clothes three weeks into camp.
-Everybody else that was injured earlier this month is back in the lineup. That includes Austin Roberts, who was probably the top performer from today. Quarterbacks kept feeding him, and he just kept hauling in catches. He had a few scores today, including one from Josh Rosen in 11-on-11s. It actually looked like he took more reps as the No. 2 TE today ahead of Jordan Wilson, which was probably the biggest reason for his productivity.
-It was a tough day for quarterbacks not named Rosen. I thought Devon Modster was inaccurate for most of the afternoon, underthrowing guys or throwing high on easier throws. Austin Burton has come way back down to earth and hasn't made a notable throw in a while after making one or two per practice in the first week or two. Matt Lynch, meanwhile, threw an interception to a D-lineman (Martin Andrus) and fumbled a few snaps in early 11-on-11s. Rosen looked fine, though.
-Christian Pabico was probably the top performing wideout today, catching several passes from Rosen.
-Drops haven't been a problem this camp, but Jordan Lasley had a couple in one 11-on-11 drill.
-Darnay Holmes once again worked as the starting kick returner today. Octo Spencer and Damian Alloway were back there as well, with a host of other skill position players.
-J.J. Molson had an interesting day. The kicker was 7-for-7 until the final kick of practice. Jim Mora "iced" him twice with two timeouts. Then, as Molson was kicking the field goal, Mora iced him again (the field goal would have been good). Mora then let the whole defense come out and yell at Molson while he was going for the game-winner -- from 43 yards out -- and Molson pushed it wide right. The defense was elated and "won" the drill.
-Mo Osling had a really nice day with the threes, recording a pick off Matt Lynch and later a pass deflection. He remains probably my highest-upside freshman after Darnay Holmes and Jaelan Phillips.
-Eldridge Massington is amazing to watch. When he's with the threes, he dominates. Then when he gets promoted to the twos against better competition, he just folds. His career at UCLA will forever be an enigma.
-Greg Rogers had a few big plays in 11-on-11. Notably it was his pressure on Matt Lynch that forced the QB's interception to Martin Andrus on a broken screen play. He also had another would-be sack that I saw.
UCLA is back at it again at 3:15 p.m. on Friday.
