UCLA moved up practice to 4:30 p.m. today, and they ended a half an hour earlier than usual. The practice was very similar to Wednesday and Thursday's workouts, with a whole lot more individuals, installation periods and about an hour of 11-on-11s.
Here were the notes from the evening:
-UCLA players finished all their summer finals today and moved into the Luskin Center before practice and Jim Mora said "it will be nice to get into a normal training camp routine" now that all that is done. Mora noted it was a "tough day for the young guys," and I thought it was a pretty tough day for the offenses in general (more on that later).
-Soso Jamabo didn't work out tonight because of a tight back, Mora said. Jalen Starks also missed practice with a family emergency. Bolu Olorunfunmi and Nate Starks took most of the reps at running back because of the absences.
-Cornerback Nate Meadors returned from whatever ailed him earlier this week and took back his starting job from Darnay Holmes.
-The depth chart was basically the same as it's been outside of Meadors for Holmes:
Offense
QB - Josh Rosen; Devon Modster
RB - Bolu Olorunfunmi; Nate Starks
WR - Everyone was rotating in and out again. Jordan Lasley remained with the threes more than the ones and twos, though.
TE - Caleb Wilson; Jordan Wilson
LT - Kolton Miller; Jake Burton
LG - Najee Toran; Michael Alves
C - Scott Quessenberry; Josh Wariboko
RG - Andre James; Poasi Moala
RT - Sunny Odogwu; Kenny Lacy
Defense
DE - Jaelan Phillips; Keisean Lucier-South
DT - Jacob Tuioti-Mariner; Chigozie Nnoruka
DT - Boss Tagaloa; Nick Terry
DE - Matt Dickerson; Rick Wade
OLB - Breland Brandt; Mique Juarez
MLB - Kenny Young; Lokeni Toailoa
OLB - Josh Woods; Krys Barnes
CB - Denzel Fisher, Darnay Holmes
S - Adarius Pickett; Will Lockett
S - Jaleel Wadood, Octo Spencer
CB - Nate Meadors, Colin Samuel
-I thought it was a pretty rough day for the offense. The flip side of that, of course, is UCLA's defense looks really, really strong early on. That secondary is clamps for the most part, and there are plenty of coverage sacks. Jacob Tuioti-Mariner and Jaelan Phillips continued to apply pressure from the edges as well. But the offense just never looked quite in sync, particularly at the quarterback spot. There's just something off about Josh Rosen through three days so far. He had a pretty 50-yard touchdown pass to Darren Andrews off a beautiful playaction, but outside of that throw, he was inaccurate throughout the afternoon, missing high a lot and overthrowing others. This offense seems pretty complicated, and there were several times Rosen had to run back to the sideline from the huddle to figure out what play to actually run from Jedd Fisch, so maybe he's just thinking too much as UCLA tries to install its new offense. But it's kind of surreal to see a guy with Rosen's talents be off this much. Not time to panic yet, but ears are perking up.
-Other quarterbacks weren't immune to the struggles. Austin Burton got yelled at for trying to go to the sideline to get a play in hurry-up 11-on-11 from Fisch, with Mora yelling, "This isn't high school!" Devon Modster, though, continued his stellar play. I saw him throw a beautiful touchdown pass to Christian Pabico on a little post route in 7-on-7. I had a few other notes about his good throws in my notebook, too. Matt Lynch, meanwhile, has been a forgotten man with Burton earning seemingly most of the third-team reps, but he had probably the throw of the day, hitting Darren Andrews on a strike over Elijah Gates for a 20- or 30-yard gain.
-Osa Odighizuwa had a nice day in 11-on-11s, recording a would-be sack and getting down the line for a tackle for a loss later that I noticed. His development seems to be coming along nicely. Which make Stephan Zabie's afternoon even more impressive. Zabie has been looking good the last two days because he's been getting walk-ons in 1-on-1s, but he stoned Odighizuwa pretty good in one rep I saw. He's been everything you'd want to see from a low four-star tackle through three days so far.
-Darnay Holmes had an interception off Burton in 7-on-7s.
-The right tackle job might be interesting to watch going forward. I thought Sunny Odogwu was fine on Wednesday, leaked a little oil on Thursday, and wasn't very good today at all. He was beat a couple times in the 1-on-1 reps I saw, once on an inside move from Jaelan Phillips and another on a speed rush by Jacob Tuioti-Mariner. He just doesn't have the feet to deal with quick inside moves or fast speed rushes off the outside. Kenny Lacy hasn't been much better, but he seems to handle the speed moves better at least. The two actually rotated at starting right tackle for a bit in 11-on-11s today. When the pads come on, I'd imagine Odogwu's huge frame and power will allow him to separate from Lacy, but we'll see.
-Jordan Wilson had a few nice catches for solid gains in 11-on-11s. Like Odighizuwa, he's progressing nicely and should be this team's No. 2 TE behind Caleb Wilson (who by the way is struggling to pass block, but still catching everything).
-I had J.J. Molson at a perfect 4-for-4 today, with makes from 35, 39, 35 and 38.
-The punter competition wasn't great again today, though Stefan Flintoft beat out Austin Kent. I had Flintoft's kicks at 50, 40 (kind of a shank), 45, 57 and 50 with varying hang times. I had Kent at 50, 40 (kind of a shank), 35 (definitely a shank) and 40.
UCLA is back at it on Saturday at 3:15 p.m. I'd imagine this would be the first day of pads, as today was the first day in spider pads.
