JAQUEZ JR., JUZANG NAMED TO NABC’S PRESEASON PLAYER OF THE YEAR LIST
Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Johnny Juzang are the only players from the Pac-12 on the 20-person watch list
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – UCLA juniors Jaime Jaquez Jr. and Johnny Juzang have been named to the 20-person preseason watch list for the 2022 NABC Division I Player of the Year, as announced Thursday by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC).
Jaquez Jr. and Juzang were both selected as preseason first-team All-Pac-12 honorees last month, having played vital roles for UCLA during the 2020-21 season. They are the only two Pac-12 representatives on the NABC’s 20-person preseason watch list.
The 2022 NABC Division I Player of the Year award will be announced during the week of the 2022 NCAA Final Four in New Orleans.
Juzang, a 6-foot-7 guard from Tarzana, Calif., was UCLA’s leading scorer in 2020-21, having averaged 16.0 points per game in 27 contests (26 starts). He shot 44.1 percent from the field and 35.3 percent from 3-point territory. Juzang averaged a team-best 22.8 points in UCLA’s six NCAA Tournament games, as the Bruins earned their first trip to the NCAA Final Four since 2008.
Jaquez Jr., a 6-foot-7 guard/forward from Camarillo, Calif., averaged 12.6 points and a team-best 6.1 rebounds per game as a sophomore last season. Jaquez Jr. shot 48.6 percent from the field in all 32 games (32 starts) and has played in all 63 games for UCLA the past two seasons.
UCLA will host Chico State in an exhibition game on Thursday, Nov. 4. Game time is 7 p.m. The Bruins are scheduled to open their regular-season schedule against CSU Bakersfield on Tuesday, Nov. 9. Game time of the season opener is 8 p.m. (PT) in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom.
