As expected another shoe dropped in the FBI / college basketball investigation. For those who follow recruiting, it was also no surprise Kansas was named as a school getting bought and paid for recruits.
Gatto (former Adidas executive) was among a group that beginning around October 2016 and continuing until around November 2017, “conspired to illicitly funnel approximately $90,000 from Company-1 (Adidas) to the mother of a top high school basketball player,” according to court documents. ”The payments were made in connection with a commitment by the student-athlete to attend the University of Kansas, a school sponsored by (Adidas) and with the expectation that the student-athlete would sign with (Adidas) upon entering the NBA.”
The same group, the charges say, also agreed to make payments to the legal guardian of another top-rated prospect who committed to KU.
The big laugher in the story was KU's response with Kansas Joe Monaco claiming the Jayhawk baseketball program was "named as a victim." No Joe, your coach was either complicit (a la Sean Miller) or chose to look the other way (like Roy Williams and the fake classes.
One of the recruits (whose mother is alleged to have received at least some $90,000.) is assumed to be Billy Preston, originally from California but transferred to Oak Hill in Virginia. The other player is Silvio De Sousa.
Preston never played for Kansas after being investigated as to the source of funds for a car involved in a one car accident. De Souse however did play, and became a key player.
Also named in the report was North Carolina State, Miami, and Louisville, as well as four unnamed recruits.
