Had a half-hour conversation with Charlie Collins, NFL and SMC background, the rising HC at
Oaks Christian over the weekend. They look poised for a solid year, having lost only 4 seniors from
a team that made it to the state semi-finals in 2017. He sees 6 likely D-1 recruits from his team,
including RB Zach Charbonnet who recently committed to Jim Harbaugh at Michigan. The others
include QB/MLB Josh Calvert (brother 6'5" Bo Calvert is an incoming UCLA freshman LB)
and WDE Kayvon Thibodeaux, currently the #4 national recruit at any position.
Collins likens QB/MLB Josh Calvert to a 'Jim Thorpe' prototype with great instincts and huge raw
talent (if not perfect QB mechanics) who projects as a college LB. Thibodeaux could easily
be headed out of state to Ohio State or the SEC but no decisions yet. A new 6'7" 290 left OT
transfer from North County San Diego is another strong D-1 candidate. They start practices today.
