Wow - excited and surprised about last night. I thought we would be the team that made mistakes and get hammered. Instead they made the mistakes and got hammered.
Once again last night showed what a great football coach Coach Mora is. We are truly fortunate to have him running this program. If he only could recruit and by recruit I mean both evaluate talent and close as well as he can coach this program will be among the truly elite because he is truly an elite coach.
Looking at our roster he has done what is probably the worst job of any program in the conference at recruiting QBs. We are fortunate that he inherited Hundley and that Rosen came along when he did but their is no other school in this conference that has no depth at QB although Oregon State and Washington may challenge that statement. If Rosen stays healthy it is all good for now - but he better start bringing in some guys who can play because next year's recruit does not look like a Pac-12 quality guy either.
RB - we are in great shape and despite some big time whiffs - especially Mixon and Freeman - the present and the future look bright.
WR - way too many whiffs and mistakes to count. Payton is a stud, Duarte is a stud, but even Mossi has fallen from where he looked last year. Massington and Fuller also have not done much this year. A lot of that has to do with Rosen and what we are doing on offense but how many stud WRs can we miss on? Add JuJu Smith though to this group and we would be awesome. We are good enough here but not elite and the more respect we get by winning the easier it will become to get these studs we have missed on.
TE - well this is a complete joke and we need and want to change that.
OL - he has done a very good job here. We have a great starting unit. If Goines and Quissenberry were healthy we would have good depth as well but we have rebuilt this. It took time and Coach Mora and staff (mainly Coach Klemm) deserve all of the credit.
DL - Again, way too many misses, especially last year. A serious lack of depth will continue to bite us in the behind this year but it looks like we have a chance this year to bring in the guys we have missed on in the past, the problem is they will be true freshman next year. But overall if we can stay healthy (a big if...) we will be OK this year and next.
LB - again, way too many misses. It really shows now. With Myles out, yikes. The good news for me is that Kene is playing more, Wallace is not in the rotation and Saav is getting some run. We need Jayon healthy, he is critical to this year's group. We really need to beef this group up in this recruiting cycle and hope some of the other youngsters - Woods, KLS become players. What happened to Judge? I did not see him last night and I really thought with Myles out he could get some play.
CB - again too many misses. If we had Adoree - wow. I know we had no real chance with Adoree or Marshall but those type of things will change if we keep on winning.
S - We got a little unlucky not getting Budda and again recruiting has not been top notch here but we have enough athletes here. Good to see Goodman play well last night (led us with 10 tackles), but I am not as big a Wadood fan as most on this board.
Special teams - we need a punter, I hope he is the guy coming in. Fairburn has done fine, not elite and it needs to be upgraded but not sure it will be.
I know people will think I am too negative on the personnel side, but I am 100% sold on Coach Mora as an elite coach.
