for the double header. Takeaways:
- Bagley is a future #1 pick. Better jumpshot and 3ball at this stage than I imagined. Super long. Unlimited potential. Will be a program changer for that 1 year whoever gets him (hopefully us).
- Riley is going to be a 4 year player. Seemed to disappear at times. Wasn't quick enough to blow by his defender but also wasn't quite strong enough to overpower him. Classic tweener. Has his work cut out for him.
- Oregon State is getting a good one in Ethan Thompson. Was maybe the best player of either game tonight.
- Bol Bol is raw. Needs to get much, much stronger. Did protect the rim well however with some nice blocks pinned against the backboard. Showed nice touch around the rim. Needs to get nastier in the paint though. Was outboarded by 6'6" Eli Scott (15 rebs to Scott's 21 rebs)
- Gelo will not see much playing time next year. Or in year 2 for that matter. Maybe in year 3 with his bro setting him up. Can see that he's going to have difficulty getting any kind of shot off at the next level. Resorted to awkward runners off the wrong foot, off balance bank shots, hook shots. If he's not on from range, it's ugly. Looks to be about 20 lbs overweight.
- Whoever says Melo will be the best Ball bro is crazy. He's talented and has unlimited range but doesn't have the mental game or unselfishness of Zo. Seemed to get caught up in the oohs and aahs of the game and wanted to make the highlight play every single time.
- Not much from Okongwu or Scott tonight. I guess you have to credit Bol Bol for preventing anything inside the paint for Chino Hills. Was too bad, was looking forward to getting a better look at Okongwu, although the word on the street is he doesn't want to play his college ball with the Balls (psst, could be SC bound).
- Nice game from Cal commit Justice Sueing (great name btw) for Mater Dei. Nice array of finishes at the rim and made big FTs at the end. Nice 4 year player.
- Best player for Mater Dei without a doubt was their leader and PG Spencer Freedman. Tiny, tiny guy but played steady against that Chino Hills press. Made timely shots, nifty layups and great passes. Way too small to be a player at any major school but will be a nice player at Harvard if he chooses to go there. Interestingly he has an offer from SC.
