UCLA’S TYGER CAMPBELL ONE OF FIVE FINALISTS FOR BOB COUSY AWARD
Campbell has averaged 12.0 points and 4.3 assists in 25 games this season
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – UCLA junior Tyger Campbell has been selected as one of five finalists for this season’s Bob Cousy Award, honoring the nation’s best point guard, as announced on Monday morning.
Campbell, a 5-foot-11 guard from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, has averaged 12.0 points, 4.3 assists, and 2.6 rebounds in 25 contests for UCLA (21-6, 13-5 Pac-12) during the 2021-22 season.
Campbell joins James Akinjo (Baylor), Andrew Nembhard (Gonzaga), Sahvir Wheeler (Kentucky), and Collin Gillespie (Villanova) on this season’s list of five Cousy Award finalists. The Bob Cousy Award is determined each season by a national committee of top college basketball personnel, in conjunction with the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Massachusetts.
Through games played on Sunday, Feb. 27, Campbell ranked No. 1 in the Pac-12 in assist-turnover ratio (3.4) and No. 4 in assists per game (4.3). He also ranked No. 4 in the league in 3-point shooting percentage (42.0%) and No. 11 in 3-pointers made per game (1.7).
Looking at the national leaderboards, Campbell ranks No. 6 in assist-turnover ratio (3.4). The redshirt junior guard has totaled 108 assists and 32 turnovers in 25 games. He has shot 44.3 percent from the field, 42.0 percent from 3-point territory, and 81.7 percent at the free-throw line. Campbell has the fewest turnovers (32) of any of the five finalists for this season’s award.
Campbell has become the third UCLA player in the past nine seasons to be named a finalist for the Bob Cousy Award. Most recently, Lonzo Ball was one of five finalists as a freshman at UCLA in 2016-17. Previously, Kyle Anderson was selected as one of five finalists during his sophomore campaign in 2013-14. UCLA has never had a point guard win the award since the Bob Cousy Award was introduced in 2003-04.
This marks the 19th year in which the Bob Cousy Award recognizes the top point guard in NCAA Division I men’s basketball. Named after Hall of Fame inductee Bob Cousy (Class of 1971), a former Boston Celtic standout and guard at Holy Cross University, the Bob Cousy Award was presented to Ayo Dosunmu of Illinois last season.
The winner of this season’s award will be presented on a date (to be determined) along with with the other four members of the “men’s starting five,” including the Jerry West Shooting Guard Award, the Julius Erving Small Forward Award, the Karl Malone Power Forward Award and the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center Award.
A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the initial watch list (20 candidates), back in November. That list of five finalists will be presented to Mr. Cousy and the Hall of Fame’s selection committee. The winner of the 2022 Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award will be determined by a combination of fan votes and input from the Basketball Hall of Fame’s selection committee.
