Let me first say point guard is easily the most misunderstood position in basketball. Saying a recruit is a point guard can mean a Lonzo Ball passer extraordinaire. It can also mean a scorer deluxe, who also sets up his teammates like Russell Westbrook.
Speaking of which the dean of deans on basketball reporting is Hall of Fame writer Frank Burlison. You may remember Frank as the originator of the Long Beach Telegram's Best In The West Poll. THE bible on recruiting, at a time before chat boards existed.
Frank is still around, scouting players whose fathers and uncles were on his Best In The West squads years ago. Many, many coaches refer to Frank's opinion. For example he was the one who originally jumped on Westbrook, and brought Ben Howland's attention to him.
As it turns out Burlison is very high on Logan Johnson, in fact that's the reason I brought up Westbrook. While reporting on Johnson, Burlison included a snippet that Johnson's talent was growing at the fastest pace he's seen since Russell.
Considering the source, that is really saying someone and we should increase our watch on him. As I previously wrote, Johnson's athleticism allows for some spectacular leaping and shot blocking. Then he's also got a very pure looking outside shot.
Watching more of him play guard shows that while's not a spectacular passer (a la Lonzo) he delivers the ball to the right player at the right place and time. In short he's a combo guard who gets it done.
Taking Burlison's opinion into account, makes it's very possible Johnson has an exponentially growing upside. He does remind me more than just a little bit of what Russell looked liked .... two years before he showed up in Westwood.
Johson's got that same boyish face, and like the HS Westbrook looks very young for his age. In addition he's makes that make you say wow, and wishing for better competition to see if he could do that against the best.
