We should be a 3/4 or 5/2 defense

If you look at the roster and also the skillset of the players is OBVIOUS that we should be an odd front defense. This shows the ineptness of Mora and Bradley and also shows how little they build a defense around the talent they have.

Mora only went to an even front (4/3) because we were getting murdered by Stanford and SC. I would argue part of the reason for that was both bad DB play as well as bad offensive scheme. Rather than scrapping a defense he spent 5 years recruiting for, he should have simply looked at the offensive scheme and figured out how that could match up better. But of course, he screwed that up too by blowing it up and going to a pro-style that we ALSO didn't have the players for. At least he found Fisch which seems to be the OC we've been looking for. His offense not only is versatile, but it also complements the defense, unlike NZone.

Back to the defense. The fact that the defense is SO bad really is unbelievable because with the offense we have they only have to be average. They really don't even need to be dominate. So even though we lucked into going to an odd front which was mainly due to injuries, I fear we will go back to the ill-fitted 4/3 defense once everyone is healthy. But, to show you this is how it should look if we went all-in on an odd front defense.

If you look at this depth chart, it clearly matches the strengths of each player. If injuries started to become an issue, you simply could go back to a 4/3 defense as a change of pace. We could be as diverse on defense as we are on offense. But, that would take imagination, planning and roster management, none of which have the defensive coaches been adept at doing.

I also believe that we are decent in the DB position its just the players playing now are especially young and inexperienced. I agree with StraighVod in another post who said we should have NEVER left a freshmen, regardless of how talented, one on one with a 5 year, AA-level WR. That was just stupid.

If we simply game plan better and put the players in the best possible positions for them to be successful I think we can move up to an average defense. That's all we need. If Rosen knows he doesn't have to score every time he has the ball I suspect the stupid interceptions go away too. It's frustrating because we really aren't that far away but considering the coaches, it leads to very little hope.
