UCLA wrapped up its first phase of spring practice Saturday with a two-and-a-half hour workout. The Bruins will now go on break for spring break/finals week, and return April 2 (per coach Chip Kelly). Here were the notes from the final March workout:

NOTES FROM CHIP

-On the spring practice schedule, in which UCLA will now have two weeks off before returning to finish up their 15 practices, Kelly said that's mainly in place so UCLA doesn't miss days on the road recruiting in the spring recruiting period.

-During these two upcoming bye weeks, Kelly said they'll "digest" all the tape and do a "thorough evaluation" of the practices so far.

-Chip says the team hasn't "even thought about" picking a quarterback starter yet. He said there's not really a plan in place in terms of snap counts, either, with everybody getting "pretty equal" reps, he said.

-Kelly said early official visits don't seem likely with him at UCLA just because the school has such a high academic standard. In other words, UCLA needs to wait longer to see if a recruit can actually get in the school before they come on the visit.

INJURIES

-Kelly said he's not sure if and when any of these guys will come back. But here were the guys in yellow jerseys today:

-DL Greg Rogers
-OL Michael Alves
-OL Jax Wacaser
-LB Josh Woods
-LB Lokeni Toailoa
-OLB Jaelan Phillips
-TE Caleb Wilson
-DB Keyon Riley
-DB Colin Samuel
-DL Rick Wade (in a walking boot on his left foot)

RECRUITS

-There were quite a few recruits out there. Here were the bigger names I noticed:

-2020 OL Julian Polendo

SATURDAY DEPTH CHART

-Along the D-line, everybody rotated at pretty much all spots, so don't take that part of this two-deep in stone. Everything else seemed pretty true, though:

OBSERVATIONS

*UCLA finally did some hitting and actual tackling. So I'll break this portion of the notebook up in terms of non-contact stuff and then actual contact stuff:

Early non-contact work

-Moses Robinson-Carr was a terror all day, especially in this early period. He had a couple sacks and a big TFL in these non-contact 11-on-11s.

-Mique Juarez had a pick-six off Matt Lynch in 7-on-7s.

-In OL-DL 1-on-1s that I watched, I didn't see a scholarship OL win a rep against this defensive line.

The good stuff

-UCLA had two separate periods of full contact 11-on-11s. The first was redzone, giving starters and second-string various drives. The second period was drive-the-length-of-the-field, giving starters and second-stringers various drives as well. Here were my notes:

-Devon Modster had a better day today, highlighted by a touchdown throw on the first redzone drive with the starters. He threw a deep out route to Christian Pabico for the score.

-The starting O-line had flashes in the full contact drills, with Boss Tagaloa showing he can move some bodies around inside. There were a few third-and-shorts they were able to convert. However, on third-and-goal from the goal line, they weren't able to get push and were stopped short. On fourth-and-goal, Kelly elected to throw it, with Devin Asiasi muscling his way through Mo Osling for the TD.

-Josh Kelly had a nice touchdown run, taking a stretch run to the outside for a six- or seven-yard score. The RB competition is just as wide open as the QB competition, in my eyes.

-Kelly's system features a variation of the Noel Mazzone swing route that was unstoppable today, particularly with Soso Jamabo running it. Jamabo had some big yards hauling in a few catches on the play throughout the day.

-Mique Juarez was outstanding in the live drills. He moved sideline to sideline very well, stopping Jamabo on a few plays. He's gotten better and better every day out here and is finally showing signs of five-star life.

-Matt Lynch was pretty lethal on the read-options today, choosing to keep most of them and scoring a TD with one in redzone drills.

-Keisean Lucier-South and Osa Odgihizuwa had notable sacks in the afternoon.

-To end the day, the defense dominated the final two drives, shutting down Modster on a three-and-out and then sending the second-string backward 10-15 yards on another three-and-out. It was a better day for the O, but defense still further along.

We'll have a bunch of recap coverage of these six practices over the next two weeks, and then we'll get right back into it the first week of April.
