Think about it, he gets the UCLA job, one he'd shown no qualifications for and certainly hadn't earned.

Day 1 survives the media coverage over the fact that he defended a rapist then let him back on the team even after he copped a plea. At schools less politically correct that might've been sayonara. He lives.

Year 1 after an uneven season makes the sweet 16 with 3 1st round draft choices. Hints of nepotism as his son plays in front of a 1 and done. People aren't thrilled but are patient. He lives, gets an extension..

Year 2 has a bad season, with the worst loss in school history. Don't deserve a bid, get one anyway. lucks into the easiest match-ups and gets gifted a round 1 win on a blown call. Hints of nepotism are now gone. Bryce plays all the time, jacks up the ball at will, plays no D. People are pissed but not many calls for his ouster.

Year 3 Craters, team loses to it's rival 3x (and everybody else), gives up in the last month of the season, even hurts Monmouth's RPI. Bryce is now playing Kobe minutes and shooting with the same impunity while not even trying to play defense. 350 emails are received by DG and 2 banners flown over the school, but all Alford has to do is affix his name to Dorell's cut-and-pasted apology letter and give up a year off an extension he'll never see.

Assuming the whole team doesn't transfer (which actually might happen), Ball might be good enough to get him back in the tourney so that when does get fired he will get to complain that he took his team to the tourney 3 out of 4 years. He'll get to showcase lil B one more year, and a better season next year will help him maybe get a low level D-1 job instead of sitting in the unemployment line or coaching D-2. All that and $5 million.

Hence, Alford is killing it.

*Weirdly the letter and give back is actually more than I expected DG to pull off. There wasn't anyway he was firing Alford without a gun to his head so he had no leverage.
