General takeaways: defense was a lot more aggressive than we thought before it became a blowout. Run defense was much better than we remember after the way the second half went. Offensive formation usage kept Hawaii on its heels. Unlike the A&M game, the staff pretty much aced its prep for this game.

I started out doing drive/notable play summaries, found it easier to just do play-by-play later. Let me know if anything is unclear:

Hawaii 1st drive

UCLA- stops run twice w/ 7 defenders in the box, DL did a good job

UCLA 1st drive

Set up TD in this game w/ playcalling last week- 21 (2 RBs and 1 TE) personnel w/ FB shaded right, only ran out of this formation against A&M, hit Hawaii w/ the counter using playaction to find Andrews downfield. Hawaii had 8 in the box b/c it thought run all the way

Hawaii 2nd drive

Stuffed one run, got gashed in base when Hawaii went max protect, Hawaii nice counter running PA out of max when UCLA was in goal line defense basically (aided by bullshit non-targeting block), Lokeni doing well with run fits but missing tackles, why did Hawaii try to attack the edge on 3rd down run?

UCLA 2nd drive

Rosen scans the whole field from right to left on 3rd and 7 in approx. 1.5 seconds before settling on the little dumpout to Starks for the 1st down

TD to Howard was blocked up perfectly- picked up a 6 man run blitz on 1st and 10 with 6, clean pocket, wide open space in the intermediate area left of the hash that Theo cut into

Hawaii 3rd drive

Hawaii goes two tight (12 personnel) and is able to create a gap again off left tackle, similar to 2nd drive

In general, noticing a lot of base and man. Not really that conservative first few Hawaii drives. Generally effective against the run.

WTF Will Lockett? No need to hold there. Gave Hawaii life on this drive

QB Brown slippery on 1st down. UCLA did well there, Brown just made a better play

Nicely designed Hawaii run on 1st down. UCLA DL needs to be more penetrative but Hawaii OL had both C and RT pulling to block Barnes and Lokeni respectively. LB made to look bad on that play.

Could’ve used Kenny Young on 2nd down: Hawaii had 3 WR tight in and RB ran a flat route, caught for TD, defense looked confused pre-snap and had no one shadowing RB (looked like Spencer’s job but he had his head turned at the snap and got blocked out of the play before he realized where his man was)

UCLA 3rd drive

Hawaii clearly aware of 21 personnel playaction from before, has 7 men in the box but DBs 10 yds off the line in cover 3 when it sees a FB and TE, don’t wanna get burned over the top again, Josh sees that and looks like an RPO where OL and RBs think it’s a run but Josh can pull it and hit the WR with a quick out if he sees space for WR to exploit. Theo turns a catch at LOS into 18 yard gain.

21 personnel again, Hawaii CBs in tighter zone (cover 2) now respecting quick out, so UCLA runs playaction again and there’s huge space between CB and S for Andrews to exploit on corner route

21 personnel, Hawaii has 8 in the box guessing run and they guessed right, off tackle right for 4 yard gain, J. Starks looked plodding on this run, no burst when ball hit his gut but limited room to run anyway, turned into 4 yards because he’s a load to bring down

21 personnel, run blown up, C. Wilson whiffed on block

Shotgun, 5 OL pick up 5 pass rushers, Rosen frozen rope to Theo. Not many college QBs can put that kind of zip on a ball. Had Bolu in flat wide open if he wanted to try that

Shotgun, well defended by Hawaii DBs, Josh had Bolu open early in left flat if he wanted him but waited too long to turn that way hoping one of 3 WR on the right would break free, Bolu planted by mike LB who realized the coverage gap and filled it by the time the ball got there

12 personnel, great blocking by Alves pushing DT to the left while James/2TEs sealed off the right, created huge hole, made even better by Q getting to second level and taking on LB, 13 yard run after Bolu stiff arm

12 personnel, Bolu to goal line on 1st and goal

12 personnel, Bolu stuffed

21 personnel, toss left to Felton, J. Starks cut block clears the edge for TD

Hawaii 4th drive

Def starts in nickel, but 10 yard run on 1st down and Wadood injury shouldn’t have happened. Lokeni had RB dead to rights for loss and whiffed, resulting run results in double blow to Wadood’s head

Base under, single high. 6 blockers beat 4 UCLA DL, LBs playing off, 5 yard gain.

Base under, single high. Hawaii 12 personnel. 8 men in the box reacting to run beat Hawaii’s 7, 1 yard gain.

Base over, Lokeni as WILL and Barnes as MIKE (not sure why), Hawaii trips left and one WR right, Hawaii hit short hitch to far left for 7

Base over. Clear pick play, offensive PI.

Nickel (basically dime) on 3rd and 12. Hawaii trips right. Good coverage all around, forced (fake) punt.

UCLA 4th drive

Trick play out of 11 personnel (technically, since Wilson is a TE but was split out as a receiver to the left in order to enable him to throw)

Shotgun, 11 personnel. Rare incompletion on hitch route into endzone

21 personnel (I-form). 7 UCLA blockers get beat by 6 Hawaii defenders, run up the gut stuffed.

Shotgun, 11 personnel. Decent protection, but this play is all about the throw. A bullet to Andrews for the TD, scouts will drool over this. A freaking dart that many NFL QBs couldn’t fit into such a tight window.

Hawaii 5th drive

Nickel, playing straight up with 5 yard cushions. Darnay pick six, instincts off the charts

Hawaii 6th drive

Two-minute drill defense, nickel straight up. Hawaii eats up cushion for 9

Nickel, short run for 1st down but good gap fit by Woods

Nickel, solid throw by Hawaii QB for 9

Dime with press-man, clear out the middle on slant to slot WR covered by off-safety. Good defensive call, better offensive play design and recognition by QB

Nickel, cover-2. Hawaii eats up cushion for 15 yards

Nickel, cover-2. Pass rush really not getting there with 4. PI Keyon Riley

Nickel, off-man. QB scrambles, pass dropped.

Nickel, zone. Good coverage by DBs, Riley stays with his man, incomplete.

Nickel, press-man, 6-man blitz. Philips gets home on a stunt, forces bad throw, incomplete.

4th down- 3-3-5 nickel, 3 man rush, man coverage. Hawaii has 1st down but dropped by WR.

UCLA 5th drive

Shotgun. 3 man rush, Miller beat like a drum on inside swim, Rosen sacked. Inexcusable.
