UCLA ran through about two and a half hours of mostly walkthrough stuff on Friday morning. But while there wasn't much action to write about on the field, there were certainly some notes:

Notables

-Defensive back DeChaun Holiday moved to linebacker today (why they won't move him to wide receiver is still beyond me). He ran with the twos at outside linebacker as Breland Brandt (knee) and Mique Juarez (still a no show) weren't available. He got burned often when I watched, mostly by Jordan Wilson.

-Jacob Tuioti-Mariner elected to not have surgery on his possible appendicitis, instead opting for antibiotics. Angus McClure said he'll return to the field this evening.

-Tons of players sat out this morning practice, although almost all of them looked precautionary: Mossi Johnson, Conor McDermott, Kenny Lacy, Takkarist McKinley, Fabian Moreau, Scott Quessenberry and Eddie Vanderdoes. I'd bet all except one or two are back for tonight's workout.

-JUCO OL commit Ronald Rudd visited practice.

-Got the chance to stand next to Cameron Judge in post-practice interviews, and he's noticeably bigger. He said he's up from 214 to 230 pounds now, and it shows.

-Angus McClure worked Boss Tagaloa in with the ones today and said he looked "outstanding." He's really had a great camp, flashing everything we thought he'd be and more so far.

-McClure said Vanderdoes' recovery has reached the "high 90s" and he said he's "really flashed" in recent practices.

-Kenny Young said he's noticed a much more physical offense from Kennedy Polamalu, saying it's good for the defense, as "it's time to beat Stanford."

Practice observations

-Working with the No. 1 kickoff coverage team was Lokeni Toailoa, the lone freshman on the unit. On the kickoff No. 2 team, both Brandon Burton and Jordan Wilson got run there.

-Working at kick returner today were Jordan Lasley, Damian Alloway and Brandon Stephens. I wonder how long the Alloway experiment will last here, though. He botched a few returns, at one point causing Lasley to yell, "Get it, fool!"

-Randall Goforth once again worked as the starting nickel corner, with Tahaan Goodman coming in to replace him at safety.

-Jordan Wilson had two nice catches early on, one a beautiful seam route over Kenny Young. The next was a touchdown over DeChaun Holiday from Mike Fafaul. I don't see much of a drop off from Nate Iese to the two Wilsons out here.

-Josh Rosen started practice on fire, probably completing somewhere around his first 10 throws.

-Octavius Spencer had the lone interception of the day, playing a little center fielder and picking off a Devon Modster deep ball. He used his return skills to take it back to the house, too.

-Kenny Walker had two big drops in practice, causing Jim Mora to be visibly upset after the second one, which was a good deep ball from Rosen. He also had a drop or two in individuals, showing his hands are still inconsistent.

-The play of the day went to Darren Andrews, who made a nice adjustment on a Rosen deep ball to haul in a leaping grab over Adarius Pickett.

-Most of the rest of practice featured situational things like Hail Mary practice, onside kicks and end-of-game, mayday scenarios. The energy lacked significantly out there, especially toward the end. When false starts started hitting, Mora went on a pretty good rant. It's my understanding, though, that tonight's practice is supposed to be a full pads, slobber knocker, so I think there was a little leeway with the coaches for this morning's light practice.

The Bruins wrap up their last San Bernardino two-a-day tonight, starting at 5:45 p.m., and they wrap up San Berdoo camp as a whole on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
