UCLA’S JAIME JAQUEZ JR. AMONG FIVE FINALISTS FOR THE JULIUS ERVING AWARD
Jaquez Jr. has scored in double figures in 18 of 27 games played this season
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – UCLA junior Jaime Jaquez Jr. has been chosen as one of five finalists for this season’s Julius Erving Award, honoring the nation’s best small forward, as announced on Wednesday.
Jaquez Jr., a 6-foot-7 guard/forward from Camarillo, Calif., has averaged 12.8 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 27 games. He has shot 47.3 percent from the field, 31.0 percent from 3-point range, and 73.1 percent at the free-throw line. He has totaled four double-doubles and has scored at least 10 points in 18 of 27 games played.
Jaquez Jr. joins Julian Champagnie (St. John’s), Ron Harper Jr. (Rutgers), Hyunjung Lee (Davidson), and Wendell Moore (Duke) on this season’s list of Julius Erving Award finalists. The Julius Erving Award is determined each season by a national committee of top college basketball personnel, in conjunction with the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Massachusetts.
Jaquez Jr. becomes the third player from UCLA named to one of these positional finalist lists in the past three days. Tyger Campbell has been named as one of five finalists for the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award. Johnny Juzang has been selected as one of five finalists for the Jerry West Shooting Guard of the Year Award.
Through games played on Tuesday, March 1, Jaquez Jr. ranked among the Pac-12 Conference’s top 20 leaders in scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage, and free throw percentage. Most recently, he scored a career-best 30 points in the team’s 77-66 win at Washington on Monday evening. In addition, he crossed the career 1,000-point mark in his 90th career game, becoming the 59th UCLA player to have scored at least 1,000 career points in a Bruins’ uniform.
This marks the eighth year in which the Julius Erving Award recognizes the top small forward in NCAA Division I men’s basketball. The award is named after Julius Erving, who was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1993 after a 16-year professional career.
The winner of this season’s award will be presented on a date (to be determined) along with the other four members of the “men’s starting five,” including the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award, the Jerry West Shooting Guard Award, the Karl Malone Power Forward Award and the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center Award.
A national committee of top college basketball personnel determined the initial watch list of 20 candidates last November. That list of five finalists will be presented to Mr. Erving and the Hall of Fame’s selection committee. The winner of the 2022 Julius Erving Award will be determined by a combination of fan votes and input from the Basketball Hall of Fame’s selection committee.
