Jordan Brown, the 5 star California big man who recently transferred to Prolific Prep in Napa, will be taking an official visit to UCLA in ten days. Notably this is only one of two official visits he's scheduled, and the other one is not to Cal. It will be to St. Johns in NYC, this Friday.
Brown has not yet pared down his list of finalists, which include the aforementioned three schools, plus Gonzaga, Louisiana Lafayette (his Dad's alma mater), Nevada, and Oregon.
Some fans seem confident that Brown is all about Cal, but that assumption has two very big holes in it. Firstly while new Bear coach Wyking Jones could very well have a competitive team in Berkeley in the future, right now Cal is very thin.
Unless Jones has a big and talented recruiting class for 2018, I don't see how Cal could expect to be in the NCAA tournament. A 5 star recruit is almost by definition thinking one or maybe two and done.
So hole #1 is not even getting to the playing time and exposure of playing of the tournament should be a big, big consideration for Brown.
Perhaps more importantly, and the telling factor in my opinion, Cal has a total of ZERO big men on their roster who are not seniors. That means if Brown goes to Cal he's going to play center, and Jordan sees his future in the NBA as a stretch 4.
He's already going to Prolific to be surrounded by talent that allows him to play away from the basket. Plus it was already well known he didn't want to play with Marvin Bagley, because he wanted to play like Bagley. That is able to post up AND roam outside like a stretch 4.
So we have hole #2. Unless Coach Jones pulls a good center into his 2018 class, Brown will be the only big man on the team. That means he's kept near the basket and has no competitive teammate to guard him. Remember he left his HS team for that very reason.
Let's hear your opinion.
