Lonzo Ball has received the 2016 Morgan Wooten and Naismith High School player of the year awards as the top high school basketball player in the country. TJ Leaf was on the second team (a top ten player). TJ Leaf is now the second highest career points scorer in San Diego County history. Ball and Leaf are UCLA's top recruits for 2016.
Steve Alford may have had a miserable season, but he can recruit. These two players will instantly make UCLA a top 20 team and probably higher. Both are athletic and should bolster UCLA's defense. The good news is that Bryce Alford, who cannot play defense, may not start. I doubt he will supplant Hamilton, Holiday and Ball in a three-guard alignment. Leaf, Welsh and Bolden will fill out the front court.
This coming Tuesday Chino Hills High School, the number 1 ranked team in the country, plays Foothill Christian High School in the CIF Southern California Open Semifinals. Ball plays for Chino Hills and Leaf plays for Foothill. It is worth watching these players who will bring UCLA back to prominence.
