So I was blessed to see the play McGuire that Dick Enberg wrote, based upon the legendary coach Al Mc Guire, kind of the anti-Wooden, although he had great respect for CJW. It was an amazing journey back in time, and two hours well spent. I understand Bill Walton will be attending tonight. One of the topics brought up in the Q & A was Al's son Allie playing for him. Some have used this as a precedent for a certain current father-son coaching tandem. Here is the difference: Allie was a standout player, whose uncle Dick McGuire was a stellar (though bad bookkeeping) coach in the 60s and 70s. Allie had a scholie to North Carolina, among a dozen offers, and was going to attend there. Al was going to retire early and coach the Milwaukee Bucks, only Marquette would not release him from his contract. So Allie came home to play for dad and was an integral part of the championship team that beat Dean Smith's North Carolina Tarheels in 1977. As a UCLA BB fan that only wishes we had a PG of Allie's caliber, it is obvious there is no comparison to be made on either end. BTW, as colorful a character as McGuire was, his guys ended up very successful in life after basketball. The only scandal was his refusal to tuck their jerseys in and choosing the NIT as a protest.
