I know a lot of UCLA people didn't like Jerry Tarkanian, but I am not one of them.
Growing up in Pasadena, I got to know the Tarkanian family quite well.
He was always generous with his time and did whatever he could to help those who needed it most. He was a tremendous basketball coach who had the gall to defy the NCAA's authority and he and his teams paid the price for it.
That didn't diminish from his ability to coach. His Long Beach State teams always gave our Bruins a stern test and his UNLV teams were among the best in college basketball.
RIP Jerry.
