Tough week on the trail

It's been a tough few weeks on the recruiting trail for UCLA, and it didn't get much better out at The Opening.

Four-star LB Camilo Eifler (Washington) and four-star LB Lamar Winston (Oregon) both spurned UCLA for other Pac-12 schools. Five-star LB Caleb Kelly cut UCLA from his top seven, and replaced it with USC instead. Four-star OL Michael Eletise, who was leaning toward UCLA in the spring, cut the Bruins from his final five (Adrian Klemm's suspension had everything to do with this, in case you were wondering).

To top it off, the Trojans added to their big class, gaining DB CJ Pollard and WR Trevon Sidney, with WR Tyler Vaughns likely only a few weeks from popping as well.

Definitely looking at two

A few weeks ago, we had heard UCLA was looking to take two quarterbacks in this class. We thought that meant the Bruins would be done when Dymond Lee said he was committing as a QB.

But we've heard UCLA has plans to put Lee at receiver, and we continue to hear the Bruins are in pursuit of one more quarterback to join Matt Lynch in this class.

In fact, we also heard from a source this week that UCLA will be looking to add two QBs in every class from here on out. The unpredictability of quarterbacks, plus the high rate of transfers, has caused this change in philosophy, the source said.

Kyon not likely to be at UCLA

For a long time, it looked as if three-star 2015 defensive lineman Kyon Clark would join UCLA in some capacity. Yet we heard from a source this month that he's actually at Chaffey College right now working to get his grades up. It doesn't appear likely he ends up at UCLA anytime soon at the moment.

Short Shots

-You can probably start scratching four-star Arizona corner Byron Murphy off the UCLA board at this point. The Bruins sent out a piece of mail to their top DB recruits this month, and Murphy wasn't on it. Murphy seems far more enamored with Texas A&M and Washington anyway.

-It's been a real struggle on the national trail for UCLA this year. While many top prospects like Rashard Lawrence, Rashan Gary, Aaron Hansford, Damar Hamlin and more have indicated they'd like to officially visit the Bruins in the fall / winter, almost all of their recruitments have more of a Cece Jefferson-like feel than a Soso Jamabo one. There is one national prospect, however, to keep an eye on: four-star TE Thad Moss. Randy Moss' son has a good connection with the Mazzones, and we also learned this month DeShaun Foster is close with Moss' inner circle out in North Carolina as well. Moss said on Twitter this week he'll officially visit for the Colorado game, and there appears to be a real chance he ends up with UCLA.

-Four-star 2017 power forward Cody Riley doesn't seem to be in any hurry to make a commitment, but he essentially told us this week UCLA is his leader. Both Steve Alford and Ed Schilling flew all the way to Charlotte this week just to see him at the Under Armour All-America Camp Powered by Rivals.com.

-Five-star 2017 DB Darnay Holmes told Rivals.com this week that it's actually Ohio State and Stanford that are piquing his interest, not UCLA and Stanford. It's becoming more and more clear that the only reason Holmes is keeping his relationship with the Bruins alive is his tremendous love for Demetrice Martin.

-UCLA is on track to get visits from 2017 Texas OLB Baron Browning and 2017 Georgia QB Davis Mills this week.
