The local beat writers had their annual sitdown lunch with Jim Mora at Pac-12 Media Days today. Here were the key notes from that conversation:
-UCLA will have a soft opening for the new Wasserman Center this weekend reserved for players, coaches, recruits and their families. From the sounds of things, this is going to be a large recruiting weekend. Commits DTR and Cam Jones have already been very vocal about it on Twitter. Marco Brewer tweeted he'll be in attendance. Chris Brown told our Washington site he's coming. Probably going to be plenty more.
-UCLA opens up camp next week, looking likely to start on Wednesday. However, Mora said they'll be closed to both media and the public because there just isn't enough space for spectators with the new facility in the way. An SID told me that's not final yet, but from the sounds of things, if fall camp is open at all this year, it'll only be one or two or three days. Gone are the days of the first two weeks being open, it seems.
-Mora said that leaving spring camp and heading into fall camp, Devon Modster is Josh Rosen's backup at QB.
-There was some question about whether Stephan Zabie would make it in to UCLA this year, but Mora said everything's been squared away. He'll join the team for the Wasserman opening this weekend. Mora added that the rest of the class made it in as well.
-It appears UCLA is giving up on the Devin Asiasi appeal and he'll redshirt this season.
-One of the issues with UCLA's new facility is that anybody (in theory) can rent a room at the Luskin Center and then watch or even film one of UCLA's practices. Mora was going to try to stop this by building a big screen or net to block the view, but he said that just won't happen this year. He said there is definitely a "concern" about a spy or an opponent possibly making that happen, so UCLA will have security out there.
-As far as the new jerseys go, Mora said there will be no alternate uniforms this year. The Bruins will have the option to go gold pants with white tops on the road, however.
-Mora said new NFL Hall of Famer Morten Anderson has developed a relationship with J.J. Molsen and has become a bit of a mentor for UCLA's kicker this offseason.
-As mentioned earlier in his podium session, the only injured players expected to be limited or unavailable for fall camp this year are OLB DeChaun Holiday and OLs Zach Bateman and Alex Akingbulu.
