UCLA kicked off its second spring practice at around 7:15 a.m. this morning and wrapped it up around 9:30 a.m. A shorts, T-shirts and helmets walkthrough-type workout, Thursday's practice format very much resembled Tuesday's. Here were the news and notes:

OBSERVATIONS
-A lot of people raved about the tempo on Tuesday, though I thought that was a little overblown. Yet today, the 11-on-11 periods were run with the pace of a frantic two-minute drill. There was never once a huddle in team drills, and as soon as the ball was spotted, the offense was on it ready to run another play.
-The results of that pace, however? Not good. UCLA's offensive line is just a sieve right now, and the no-huddle, frantic pace seemed to lead to tremendous confusion up front and blown blocks all morning. There were maybe three total positive running plays and probably a dozen-or-so would-be sacks.
-The best player at practice today? Keisean Lucier-South. Here's how his day went for me: The OLBs were doing a drill near me, and I noticed KLS finally looked thicker and grown into the five-star body he showed potential of having in high school. Then, he proceeded to dominate in team drills. He strung out one run play so well that Jerry Azzinaro boomed from the defensive backfield, "Way to set the edge!" He nearly had a pick in 7-on-7s (he dropped it), and he had at least four sacks I saw the rest of the day. It's only one day, but it kind of reminds me of when it all clicked for Anthony Barr in that first fall camp under Jim Mora.
-It was a rough day for UCLA QBs, particularly Devon Modster and Matt Lynch, who both seemed to be outplayed by Austin Burton. Lynch threw a rough pick-six to Mo Osling in 7-on-7, and a few minutes later, Modster threw a rough pick to Nate Meadors. Most of the two's completions were dump offs (though that could have been a product of having just about zero O-line play).
-Speaking of rough O-line play, Boss Tagaloa struggled to get his snaps to the QB today. As a former defensive lineman, this was expected. Zach Sweeney wasn't too much better, though, with both guys having a few fumbled snap exchanges throughout practice.
-Toward the end of practice, UCLA did some tinkering with its first-team OL, benching Jake Burton, sliding Alex Akingbulu to RT and moving Sean Seawards up to RG.
-One thing I noticed today: A lot more vocal coaching from the defensive coaches. Jerry Azzinaro and Paul Rhoads were constantly on guys. The other thing I noticed was Chip Kelly never lost his cool. It was a rough offensive practice, yet he never once seemed to be frustrated with his unit.
-Working at punt returner today were: Theo Howard, Christian Pabico, Demetric Felton and Kyle Philips
UCLA is back on Spaulding at 10 a.m. in the rain on Saturday.
