UCLA put back on the pads Thursday morning, but the workout was almost entirely teaching periods and special teams, with spurts of team drills mixed in. Here were the notes from the uneventful morning:
PERSONNEL NOTES
-Lokeni Toailoa was out of his yellow jersey for the first time this camp. He was mixed into practice lightly, just as Michael Alves was/is in his return from the yellow jersey.
-Kyle Philips, who left practice early Tuesday with a heavy limp, was out of practice in a yellow jersey today.
-Will Lockett was curiously sitting out of practice today, watching in just shorts and his jersey. Octo Spencer, meanwhile, was a full participant.
-Moses Robinson-Carr and what appeared to be Audie Omotosho (he was like 100 yards away with no jersey on) left practice early with undisclosed injuries. Robinson-Carr's injury actually ended the team portion of practice one play early.
DEPTH CHART NOTES
-As was the case Tuesday, there were about a billion combinations in the front seven, so it was very hard to track a two-deep there. Everywhere else was pretty much the same guys in the same places.
-Michael Alves rotated in again at starting right guard with Zach Sweeney. Sweeney also rotated in more with Boss Tagaloa at starting center.
-Tyree Thompson once again got a lot of run with the ones at inside linebacker with Krys Barnes for a large portion of the day. Mique Juarez was once again pushed to OLB with Thompson and Je'Vari Anderson heavily in the mix at ILB.
-J.J. Molson was the starting kicker, Matt Lynch the starting holder, and the starting long snapper was Johnny Den Bleyker.
-About a million guys worked at kick returner today, including Chase Cota.
OBSERVATIONS
-Molson kicked for the first time in practice Thursday. Other than a couple blocked kicks, which it appeared the O-line let happen, it looked like he only missed one of several kicks from inside of around 40 yards.
-I don't know whether it was more noticeable today because after seven practices we were just antsy to see anything interesting, but everything with the offense today appeared to be horizontal. I counted four total passes that went farther than 12 yards in the air, and all four were incomplete. Almost every offensive rep is some sort of bubble, screen, comeback or swing route.
-UCLA brought out new special blocking dummies today, a neat little Chip Kelly implementation to practice. They're pads shaped like bodies that are able to be tethered to assistants, and thus recreate moving defensive backs/linebackers for O-linemen to practice blocking on screen plays.
-Lots of interceptions today. Mo Osling had a pick-six off Devon Modster early in team drills. Keyon Riley had a pick-six jumping a short route from Matt Lynch. Shea Pitts got Modster late, too. Elijah Gates also dropped what would have been a pick-six as well.
-UCLA debuted some three-tight end sets today, with Jimmy Jaggers, Devin Asiasi and Jordan Wilson all in with the ones on a few series.
UCLA returns to the practice field Saturday at 10 a.m.
