Last year we saw what may have been the greatest ever, group of top boys basketball teams in one state (it was easily the greatest of all time in California).
Mater Dei had their usual plethora of D-1 recruits, then added 7'2" Bol Bol mid-season. After which they had a high national ranking all year. Sierra Canyon had the No. 1 player (Bagley), reached the No. 2 spot in the country, and had three other stars who signed with UCLA (Cody Riley), Arizona State and San Diego State.
Who could forget the Chino Hills scoring machine with the UCLA bound Ball brothers, and a big man the Bruins are all over (Onyeka Okongwu). Chino Hills reached No. 3 in the national rankings. We also had San Diego section champion St. Augustine, led by (at least currently) USC commit Taeshon Cherry. St. Augustine knocked out Sierra Canyon, then barely lost to Mater Dei in the state tournament.
Which leaves the eventual state champion Bishop Montgomery Knights, and their future Pac 12 back court tandem of Ethan Thompson and UCLA commit David Singleton. Ethan has moved on to Oregon State (and will be a star there), and the fast improving junior (and potential Bruin recruit) Gianni Hunt will take his place.
In the meantime David Singleton was filmed this fall, playing in the Ron Massey tournament at Vegas and in a fall league at St. Bernard HS in Playa Del Rey. So we can check out those videos to see if he's grown physically, and how his game is developing.
First let's start with a couple short videos, to see where his game was at and what he looked like body wise during Bishop's season a year ago. The first clip is a game vs. rival Damien HS which went into OT. After Damien hits a bucket to tie in regulation, David draws a lot of contact, but splits the defense for a missed game winner at the buzzer.
To his credit he doesn't worry about the officials, but sure doesn't take the miss lightly. You can see he expected to hit the shot. Near the end of OT Damien hits a tough shot to go ahead by one. Ethan Thompson then rushes into the front court, but is cut off with a double team. He flips to Singleton and David calmly delivers a 3 to win the game.
Study the video and take note as to David's height and moderately slight build. This is going to come up again.
