Was Mazzone really the biggest problem?

On the negative side, he and his son weren't good recruiters or evaluators in their time at UCLA. He could also be very stubborn and unwilling to adjust. On the other side, his teams put up 435 yards/game and 27 pts. A top 30 offense.

On the side of the ball, the defense which was just okay under Spanos has gotten worse. You can say injuries this year, but what about last year? They were fairly injury free with some real talent and were at best a sub marginal defense. And frankly what about next year? Clark is gone as is Jack. Yes, you get Moreau back but he isn't that good.

I'm just confused on how Mazzone is always responsible for the losses. The HC is supposedly a "defensive" guy and his hires have all been handpicked first choices. At the end of the day the offense has been significantly better than the defense every year yet no angst towards Mora or Bradley. I'd love to know the rational.
