Got busy and forgot to put this on the board yesterday, but here’s a final look at all three phases entering Saturday’s opener:


This just went up today, a game by game look at the schedule with a prediction on how UCLA will fare:

A Look at Ethan Garbers in 2019

Led Corona del Mar Sea Kings to the Division 1A CIF State Championship and a perfect 16-0 record, while also capturing the Division 3 CIF Southern title … beat Serra, 35-27, in the Division 1-A title game to cap the season ... rushed for 142 yards on 15 carries with one TD, while also going 28-for-41 for 255 yards and four scores through the air in the title game ... named the Co-Offensive Player of the Year for the CIF Southern Section Division 3 ... also named to the Orange County Register's Fab 15, as one of the top 15 prospects in the west ... first-team all-state from CalHiSports.com ... for the season, passed for 5,034 yards (341-of-490) for 71 touchdowns and five interceptions, along with 12 rushing TDs touchdowns ... 71 passing TDs were third-most in state history, behind only former Husky Jake Browning (who had 75 and 91 in two different seasons) … earned a spot on the MaxPreps.com All-America second team as a senior ... two-year starter at quarterback for the Sea Kings, totaling 9,461 yards and 128 touchdowns ... named to the All-CIF-SS Division 4 first team as a junior in 2018 ... also the 2018 Sunset League Offensive Player of the Year ... 284-of-424 with 4,135 yards and 55 TDs as a junior … rated the No. 5 pro-style QB and No. 93 overall prospect in the country, as well as the No. 12 player in California by Rivals.com ... ranked the No. 11 "pro-style" quarterback in the country and No. 54 recruit in California by 247Sports ... Examining the UCLA QB competition and how we got here

For this morning’s read until we do interviews after Tuesday’s practice, I took a deep dive into the QB competition, how it arrived at this point and the many questions that have come up in the aftermath that show this looks more like an open audition with the lights and cameras pointed directly at the three players:

Football practice 8/27

Made it to game week and UCLA gets its Coastal Carolina preparations underway a little after 10 a.m.

Plan is for likely two players to be made available after. We will get Chip before Monday’s practice.

So, depending on what exactly we see in that 15-20 minute viewing window and who they make available, maybe there will be a definitive answer on QB1.

I’ll also try to find out when the program plans to put out its first game notes of the season, which would have the first official depth chart of the season.
