Not so Random Stats

Last season, Devin Kirkwood missed the last 5 games and Gary Smith missed the last 4 games. Both played a lot of snaps on D before the injuries that ended their seasons.

UCLA with Devin Kirkwood and Gary Smith Last Season
Record: 7-1
Def Pass Yards allowed/game: 235.3
Def Points/game: 24.3

UCLA after Kirkwood got injured
Record: 2-3
Def Pass Yards allowed/game: 333.3
Def Points/game: 36.6

The three losses were all by a less than a TD for a total of 12 points.

The turnover margin in the 3 losses was 2 - 10 = -8. So, turnovers definitely played a role but it seems reasonable to believe that losing those two defensive players without adequate replacements directly impacted that last part of the season. UCLA likely wins at least one or two more games without those injuries. More defensive stops leads to less pressure on the UCLA O and more pressure on the opposing O. This quite possibly could lead to a better turnover margin.

The secondary should have more depth this season but Kirkwood when healthy is our best DB. The interior Dline has about the same depth as last season. Health is everything.

2024 OL Justin Tauanuu recaps UCLA visit, breaks down recruitment

Like I mentioned previously in the other thread, it was clear after today that it will be an uphill battle for UCLA in the four-star tackle’s recruitment.

The Bruins aren’t necessarily doing anything wrong, as he does feel like he’s a priority for Chip Kelly and the staff, but it was different when he spoke about his recent USC offer because of his family’s thoughts on the program.

If he doesn’t quite feel like a priority there, then UCLA could find itself in a terrific spot.

Actual “inside” information on Mara

This sounds ridiculous but… I own a business but am unemployed and looking for things to fulfill myself and spend my time doing. I need hobbies and meaning right now so I try to do things I used to love doing.

I went to an AAU tournament practice today and talked to a guy who supposedly places kids at schools. He said that Mara is all in on UCLA but he is under contract to his Spanish team. And because of some things grudge over a female relative of Mara and/ or because the owner felt he overpaid Mara due to this relative, the owner is not letting him out of his contract without compensation.

The guy actually seemed legit but either jet lagged or on something because he said mom, aunt, and sister interchangeably.

I live in the DC area now and not Delaware.
