Spring camp practice No. 2 - 4/6

Just got to campus. Chip will speak before practice at approx. 8:30 a.m.

Will do my best to get that video up ASAP. Without being on WiFi, it will take longer than usual to upload and we’re restricted from using our phones as we’re watching practice unless we step away from the wall atop the parking garage.

Also, won’t have Matt’s assistance with his video camera and camera today, but will try to get something on my phone of some of the new guys in camp. QBs are toughest because they’re so far away from us.

This doesn’t make sense

I was excited when I read this. Then I remembered North Carolina opened season as No. 1 and didn’t make the tournament. Do oddsmakers know we could lose our top 6 players?

NCAA Tournament odds, futures: UCLA, UConn open as early betting favorites to win 2024 March Madness

After opening the 2022-23 season unranked in the AP Top 25 and a 60-1 longshot to win the national championship, UConn on Monday cut down the nets inside NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, to claim the throne of college basketball as a worthy champion. And don't look now -- but Vegas likes its odds of going back to back.
Opening futures from Caesars Sportsbook for the 2024 NCAA Tournament peg UConn as the co-favorite in futures markets to win the championship at 12-1 odds, tied for the shortest on the board with UCLA. UConn could return five of its top six scorers from its title team depending on decisions from Donovan Clingan, Jordan Hawkins, Tristen Newton and Adama Sanogo. No team in the sport has gone back-to-back since Florida in 2006 and 2007.
There's plenty of competition nipping at UConn's heels that would make repeating a tall task, and that seems to be reflected in the futures market with seven other teams opening with 25-1 or shorter odds. Just behind UCLA and UConn is Kansas at 15-1. That is followed by Duke at 16-1, Kentucky at 18-1, Arizona at 20-1 and Houston and Purdue at 22-1. Alabama is the only team with 25-1 odds.

STORY: Notes and observations from Day 1 at UCLA spring camp as enthusiasm runs high

The first write-up of the spring. As things progress, it will be easier to focus on groups a bit more.

First day was a lot of picking and choosing where to look, so it was easiest to make most of the initial observations about the QBs since that battle is among the bigger storylines this year.

UCLA officially announces arrival of eight transfers

The UCLA football program announced Wednesday morning the addition of eight transfers: RB Anthony Adkins (Army), PK Blake Glessner (Montana State), RB Carson Steele (Ball State), QB Collin Schlee (Kent State), DE Jake Heimlicher (Penn), TE Moliki Matavao (Oregon), Oluwafemi Oladejo (Cal) and LG Spencer Holstege (Purdue).

Their announcements signal their arrival prior to spring camp, with punter Will Powers (Princeton) and safety Jordan Anderson (Bowling Green) yet to be announced.

Chip will have an advisor

UCLA hires Ken Niumatalolo, Navy's all-time winningest coach, as advisor to Chip Kelly

By Barrett Sallee

UCLA hired former Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo as the new director of leadership, the team announced Friday. It's an advisory role -- both on and off the field -- for the Midshipmen's all-time wins leader, who earned 11 bowl berths and won nine straight over Army during his 16 years in Annapolis. The run ended following a 4-8 effort in 2022, punctuated by a double-overtime loss to Army, that marked the program's third straight losing season.
Niumatalolo and Kelly have never worked together in an official capacity, but Kelly spent a week with Navy during the spring of 2017, exchanging ideas with the staff following his dismissal from the San Francisco 49ers.
"Some of the things he did at Oregon revolutionized football," Niumatalolo said then. "Everybody's doing no-huddle, one-word concepts. His offseason stuff, his up-tempo stuff, a lot of the things that he implemented, literally high school, college and pro guys are doing it. He's definitely a trendsetter."

Spring camp preview: Edge rushers/OLBs and D-linemen

Included in this are the early enrollees and transfers, but I’ll have something on the inside linebackers in a separate preview.

So, for that reason, you won’t see Cal transfer Oluwafemi Oladejo included until that story.
