GAME THREAD: No. 5 UCLA at Arizona State

Tip-off on FS1 is 7:30 p.m.

This week, Bruins head coach Mick Cronin said he expects to go deeper into his bench early tonight since ASU regularly has 10 players in its rotation. He acknowledged it can be tough for young players to get in a rhythm without consistent playing time.

“It’s tough because they don’t get a lot of extended minutes,” Cronin said of his freshmen on the bench. “Our starters are not going to be able to log and play the ironman-type minutes against Arizona State. So, I would say a big key against Arizona State is going to be Dylan (Andrews), Will (McClendon), Abramo (Canka), Kenny (Nwuba), Mac (Etienne). Those guys are going to have to give us some quality minutes.”

Alabama Shooting

I would think that if any athlete at a P12 or Big 10 Program was involved in a shooting, there would be serious consequences within/for the athletic program. I mean what kind of kids are they admitting to the university and allowing into the program? THAT falls on the HC, AD and ultimately the President of the school. What parent would knowingly want their young adult child to attend Alabama and be anywhere near the athletes in their athletic program? Same goes for any SEC school until I was shown otherwise. And, it goes for non-athletes as well. I have a daughter that's a Jr and will be applying to colleges next year. I want her to have a full college experience, but I'd honestly prefer her not be on campus at a university with a big-time athletic program...save
UCLA as I more or less know the score there...

Clark, Jaquez Jr. in running for national player of the year

UCLA senior forward Jaime Jaquez Jr. and junior guard Jaylen Clark are among the 50 players on the midseason watch list for the Oscar Robertson Trophy, given annually to the most outstanding men’s college basketball player from the U.S. Basketball Writers’ Association,

They represent half of the players from the Pac-12 on the list, joining Arizona’s duo of Azuolas Tubelis and Oumar Ballo.

2023 Pac-12 football schedule

The full release is coming this week after approval by the ADs in ranked choice voting, according to longtime writer John Canzano. Nine-game conference schedule again.

UCLA’s schedule will end the season with 8 consecutive games after its open week in Week 5 of the season.

So the Bruins won’t have the fortune of having their schedule split down the middle like this past season. Health down the stretch will already be something to watch for a program that prides itself on conditioning.

How the No. 5 UCLA men’s basketball team is being fueled by a dog bone

Kind of surprised when Jaime Jaquez Jr. brought it up that it sounds like it was the first anyone had heard of it.

Mick Cronin seems to have always been big on deflections based on everything I’ve picked up on less than a full season into covering the team, so this being a fresh angle about the team kind of caught me off guard considering how long some of the others had been on the beat:

PWO offer to RB

RB Delon Thompson of St. Bonaventure, the state’s third-leading rusher, is a physical back at 5-foot-9 and 196 pounds. Watched his team play Inglewood in August and he ran for 200+ yards and 3 TDs. He’s a workhorse.

He’s widely considered one of the top uncommitted RBs in the area. Thompson is from the same program that produced Florida State star and former NFL running back Lorenzo Booker, who mentors Thompson.

No real shock here, but Zach Charbonnet has announced his plans to forgo his remaining eligibility at UCLA in favor of entering his name in the NFL draft. Today is the last day for early entrants to make a decision.
