Dante Moore will be the starting quarterback for the East squad today in the All-American Bowl in San Antonio. Ryan and I have been here all week and watched each of Moore's practices. He's continued to gain high praise for his work during the practice sessions, and you can watch some clips of those above.

The game kicks off at 10 a.m. PT and will be shown on NBC.

2026 MBB offer

Jason Crowe Jr., a standout freshman guard for Lynwood HS, picked up an offer from UCLA today.

He’s been a big scorer who’s dropped as many as 51 points in a game this season. His father, who doubles as his HS coach, played at Cal State Northridge and I actually grew up in Carson and saw him play against the likes of a young Baron Davis, and several others, in a local pro-am summer league run each year in the early 2000s by DeAnthony Langston.

Receivers to watch in portal

The Pac-12 has had quite a few quality receivers enter the portal this offseason and one UCLA has its eyes on is former Cal receiver J.Michael Sturdivant, who entered the portal yesterday.

When Cal QB Jack Plummer entered the portal last month, that had him looking for a new destination.

He had 65 catches for 755 yards and 7 TDs as a redshirt freshman.

UCLA, of course, is losing Jake Bobo and Kazmeir Allen. That leaves Kam Brown and Logan Loya as the most proven top targets on the team heading into 2023, so it’s an area the Bruins need depth.

Cronin is 3-5 against SC

How is this even possible?! And as much as he blames the players last night for the awful second half, that's on HIM as the coach too. I like Mitch and I feel like he's a good coach but I think he gets a major pass from media because he's engaging and honest. But, let's say if he had Chip's personality, would he be getting more heat?

I know we had a magical run to the Final Four but he's yet to win a Pac 12 regular season or tournament championship. We are a basketball blue blood. This should be unacceptable IMO. I feel like coaches that are good with the media get much longer leashes than coaches that aren't good with them.

PWO RB offer

Troy Leigber, a running back for Laguna Hills, was extended a preferred walk-on offer tonight by UCLA.

He was the Orange County Register’s offensive player of the year after leading his school to a 15-1 record and CIF-Southern Section title a year removed from a shoulder injury. Leigber ran for a school record 2,695 yards and had 44 of his 52 touchdowns on the ground.

UCLA visitor breakdown: Dec. 9-11

It's an important weekend for UCLA with a few key prospects on campus for official visits. The Bruins are hosting a smaller group over the next couple days, but each of them would be a key addition to the class. Here's a closer look at that group.

Virginia cornerback transfer Fentrell Cypress is currently rated as the 17th-best transfer portal prospect by Rivals, and he is among the most-wanted players currently available. That UCLA is the first school to get him out on a trip is significant. He was a second-team All-ACC selection this season and didn't allow a touchdown this year in coverage. He also had 14 passes defensed. He's played in 18 games throughout his career with 15 starts. In 2022, Cypress had 39 tackles for the Cavaliers. A South Carolina native, Cypress is already gaining attention from numerous programs across the country, but UCLA was quick to move in on him after he entered the portal giving the Bruins an advantage. Clemson, LSU, Texas A&M, Ohio State, USC and Auburn are some of the schools reportedly in pursuit as well. UCLA is looking to upgrade its play in the secondary and is hoping to find someone who can step in right away. The Bruins had an in-home visit with Rivals100 cornerback and current Oregon commit Caleb Presley this week and Cypress is another defensive back the staff is pursuing heavily right now.

Cypress is certainly an important player to have on campus, but no prospect visiting will be more noteworthy than five-star quarterback Dante Moore. The Detroit native has been committed to Oregon since the summer, but his lead recruiter, Kenny Dillingham, is now the head coach at Arizona State. Even before that news was made official, there had been some thought that Moore would be open to exploring other options. At that time, his home-state program, Michigan State, had gained some buzz but late this week it became clear that UCLA would be one of the last programs to host the top-five prospect on a visit before he signs a National Letter of Intent later this month.

Moore is set to receive a large NIL deal at Oregon, so that is something the Bruins will have to compete with plus Ducks head coach Dan Lanning has been taking the reins in his recruitment for a while now. The Ducks sent new offensive coordinator Will Stein out to Michigan on Thursday to meet with Moore ahead of his visit to Westwood, but getting the elite quarterback on campus is a huge win for the Bruins in itself.

The 6-foot-3 signal caller has been one of the most consistent quarterbacks this season across the country and would be the future of the position at UCLA. The buzz late in the week has become increasingly closer to legitimate over Moore simply wanting to take a visit and make a free trip to Los Angeles. If UCLA can find a way to come up with an NIL package that approaches what he is expected to get with the Ducks then the Bruins could very much be in play for his commitment. The word right now is that UCLA has gained quite a bit of momentum in his recruitment but time will tell if it's enough to sway him away from his longtime pledge.

Moore is a midyear enrollee, so his plan is to sign on Dec. 21 and enroll at his college in January.

Interestingly enough, the Bruins are also bringing in current 2023 quarterback commit Luke Duncan in for a visit. The four-star prospect from Orinda has been on the rise this season, and he recently received a bump up in his ranking. The 6-foot-5 prospect fits what many programs are looking for at the position, and he is someone the staff very much likes. At this stage he has remained locked in with his pledge and having him on a visit the same weekend Moore is in town lays everything out there on the table for all parties involved about the situation. UCLA would absolutely like to have both recruits on its commitment list.

Fontana-Summit HS standout offensive lineman Tavake Tuikolovatu has been gaining more traction as a prospect throughout his senior season. It led to multiple Power Five offers, and now he is beginning to near the end of the process. An in-season visit to Utah looked like it had sealed his recruitment, but he has continued to take trips and explore his options with his most recent visit coming last weekend when he made the trek to Washington State. UCLA looks like it will be the last school to host him on a trip before coming to a decision. The fact that he has yet to pull the trigger on a commitment to the Utes feels positive for the Bruins, and UCLA should remain in the mix until it is time for the three-star offensive lineman to announce his choice.

Ben Bolch on UCLA football status

I know there are some on this site that don’t like Ben Bolch or the LA Times, but he’s a knowledgeable reporter and makes a lot of good points IMO.

Chip Kelly has a 27-29 record in five seasons as coach at UCLA.
BY BEN BOLCH
Nothing comes easy for UCLA football under coach Chip Kelly.
The first winning season ended with a last-minute pullout for the Holiday Bowl.
The first bowl game ended with a chaotic loss, a quarterback in tears and renewed doubts about whether Kelly is the right coach to lead the Bruins into their rapidly approaching Big Ten era.
There’s no need to rehash all the details of what feels like another lost season after a 37-35 setback against severely undermanned Pittsburgh in the Sun Bowl on Friday left UCLA (9-4) with three losses in its final four games, not to mention a 27-29 record in five seasons under Kelly.
What matters is getting this mess fixed before tarps outnumber fans at the Rose Bowl.
Here are four suggestions for righting the wobbly Bruins going into 2023:

Fix the defense

This one is obvious. Kelly needs to understand that his responsibilities don’t end with running a top-notch offense; the entire team is under his purview.
Sometimes it seems like he forgets this. Nick Aliotti, Kelly’s former defensive coordinator at Oregon, once said he never heard Kelly over the headsets when it came to having input on the defensive side of the ball, and maybe that needs to change.
Kelly certainly knows about defenses because he’s designed elite offenses to befuddle them going back to his days at New Hampshire. So why doesn’t he tell his coaches to stop the losing tactics like three-man rushes (see Pittsburgh, Sun Bowl) or unnecessarily large cushions (see Fresno State, 2021) on late defensive stands?
There’s also the matter of players constantly being out of position, running to nowhere and failing to make tackles, issues that haven’t been resolved after five seasons. How long will it take? Perhaps more important, how long will Kelly be given to continue ignoring this problem?
Change the staff, change the personnel, change the scheme — whatever it takes to end this eyesore.

Upgrade the talent

The arrival of five-star quarterback Dante Moore is a start, but it doesn’t resolve several longstanding issues.
The Bruins haven’t had a speedy, game-breaking wide receiver since Jordan Lasley in 2017, and the school known as Linebacker U will need rebranding if some competent reinforcements don’t arrive soon.
Every position on defense needs to be bolstered, especially the secondary, which had continued shaky play at cornerback and the departure of safeties Stephan Blaylock and Mo Osling III.
The presumed loss of running back Zach Charbonnet to the NFL also leaves the team in need of its next big-time running back. True freshman T.J. Harden appears to be a solid candidate, but the Bruins will need other options.
The transfer portal could provide salvation if Kelly can emulate what happened across town with USC’s instant infusion of high-end talent that transformed the Trojans in less than a year.

Anoint the right quarterback

Spring football might not be its annual exercise in boredom under Kelly.
For the first time since the coach’s debut season, the Bruins will be searching for their next quarterback. Barring transfers, it could be a three-man battle among Moore, Kent State transfer Collin Schlee and Ethan Garbers. Moore is expected to arrive in time for spring practice, giving him a shot to take the first snap in the season opener against Coastal Carolina on Sept. 2.
Fans will likely root for Moore to win the job given the excitement factor surrounding the most highly rated quarterback recruit in school history, but Schlee could be a steadier option given his experience. Garbers possesses a strong arm but has not led the Bruins to victory in his only start, against Utah in 2021, or off the bench at the end of games against Oregon in 2021 and in the Sun Bowl.
The glut of quarterbacks could prompt the transfer of Garbers or talented true freshman Justyn Martin, who showed promise in practice.

Engage the fan base

A coach has three primary responsibilities — the technical aspects of coaching, recruiting and ambassadorship of his program.
Kelly has thrived at one aspect of the first (offense), achieved middling success with the second (mostly through the transfer portal) and completely neglected the third (Booster? What’s a booster?).
He’s completed a minimal amount of booster events and turned down multiple interview requests from local reporters trying to reveal the humanity beneath his gruff exterior. Kelly doesn’t give the school-sponsored radio crew a heads-up on injuries or absences, standard stuff among most coaches.
But, hey, there’s always another softball interview with Dan Patrick centering on Kelly’s time in the NFL that fans might be able to hear soon.
